Team/Season Comments from coach Derek Robey
“To say we are excited for the start of the basketball season would be an understatement! We can’t wait to get going! We actually start official basketball practice the Monday after Thanksgiving…so November 27th. It can’t come soon enough for me! Last year we ended the season with a disappointing 7-14 record…ending an 8-year streak of making it to the State AA Tournament.“
“Although this year we don’t return a lot of varsity experience from a year ago, we do have a great group of leaders who are just “athletes” returning. We do have a couple of kids that “started” at one time or another (a year ago) for the Knights. Hayden Groos (our school’s standout quarterback of this year’s football team) is a returning starter…along with Henry Theobald, who came in halfway through the season as a shooting guard. At post, we will rely on Ryland Satter. He is not as tall as most other team’s post, but is a big strong competitor that should have a really decent season. Other guys fighting to be in the rotation include Sully Schlimgen, Austin Terveen and Caleb Terveen Caleb Terveen 6'2" | SG O'Gorman | 2025 State SD , Nyun Dut Nyun Dut 6'4" | SG O'Gorman | 2025 State SD , and John Lent John Lent 6'3" | PF O'Gorman | 2025 State SD . Out front, we could easily experiment with a couple of young guys… Mason Clark Mason Clark 5'11" | PG O'Gorman | 2026 State SD , Logan Mebius Logan Mebius 5'10" | PG O'Gorman | 2026 State SD , and Jaxson Weeldreyer Jaxson Weeldreyer 6'1" | SG O'Gorman | 2026 State SD , and Taten Mauney Taten Mauney 5'10" | CG O'Gorman | 2026 State SD .“
“I love coaching this year’s group. We obviously got together a few times this summer for a few team camps and such and this year’s group are enjoyable young men who seem to be good leaders, not only in and around athletics but also in the classroom setting. That goes a long way! People or fans enjoy that and I know we as coaches have more fun in those types of seasons.“
“Our kids have to continue to “buy in” if we want the Knights to get back to where we once were! I love our culture and all it stands for, yet our guys have to realize success doesn’t just happen because of success in the past. “It takes what it takes!” Meaning, there are no shortcuts! You either want to do the work and dedicate yourself to the process, or you don’t! I think this year we have some guys that potentially get it and will work to get OG back to the top. But there are no easy games…night in and night out will be a dog fight! We are in the most competitive and challenging conference or league in all of SD.“
“The best team out there on the schedule, in my opinion, (even without Rock) is Lincoln. Harrisburg will also have a solid season and return a plethora of talent. All Sioux Falls schools, Brandon Valley, and Pierre will be solid.“
