At this jamboree, we had the opportunity to see a lot of kids who are under the radar. They include the host Spartans and a Gateway Legacy team that featured many international players. The St Louis Knights is a home school team and KIPP St Louis is a charter school.
Here is a look at some of the top standouts from the Hazelwood East Jamboree.
THE STARTING FIVE
Luis Bridgwater (Gateway Legacy): A 6’7 2024 forward from the Dominican Republic who was a force in the paint with his size and athleticism. He threw down some impressive dunks in transition. He finished well around the basket and he also controlled the boards.
*******
Gabriel Cambria (Gateway Legacy): A 6’2 2024 guard from the Dominican Republic who played with a dynamic burst with the ball in his hands. He was constantly on the attack as he used his strength to finish on power drives in the lane. His iso game was very good as he could also pull up to hit the mid range jumper.
******
Gavin Kimberlin (St Louis Knights): A 6’4 2025 guard who has an impressive offensive package to go with a nice feel for the game. He scored on some nice takes in traffic and he could hit the 3-pointer. He was also threading the needle with some excellent passes.
*****
Jean-Pierre Villegas (Gateway Legacy): A 6’3 2024 guard from Columbia who was the best perimeter shooter that I watched during the evening. He was coming off screens and knocking down 3-pointers with a smooth shooting stroke and a quick release.
******
Jaylen Vance (Hazelwood East): A 5’8 2025 point guard who was quite a speed merchant in the open court. He was blowing by defenders off the dribble and he could elevate on his jumper. He also used his quickness as a very good on ball defender. He was very disruptive with his ball hawking.
*****
Other Players of Note
Lamont Spence (KIPP): A 5’10 2024 guard who was very effective getting downhill on the drive. He has a good combination of quickness and strength. He also handled the ball and passed it well against pressure defense.
Montez Akers (Hazelwood East): A 6’4 forward who used his thick body to muscle inside for buckets. He also ran the court well in transition.
Jaivaughn Jones (KIPP): A 5’11 2025 guard who has very good athleticism. He has a quick first step and a nice burst to get by defenders. He will also challenge people on defense.
Paul Crawford (Hazelwood East): A 6’3 2027 guard who handles the ball well and slashes to the basket. He’s a talented young player who definitely bears watching.
Aaron Brown (Hazelwood East): A 6’0 2026 guard is a smooth young lefty who finished well off his penetrating drives. He could also hit the perimeter jumper coming off screens.
