Q&A with coach Jon Peterreins
PHD: Could you write a couple sentences summing up last season?
“The 23-24 Deuel Cardinals put in the hard work and helped move the program in the right direction. The varsity finished with a season record of 13-9 and a Northeast Conference record of 7-3. The Junior Varsity finished 10-9 and gained some great experience for next season. The C Team finished 8-2 and also made some great progress.“
PHD: How did the offseason go for your team/program?
“Our focus has been to continue to add skill and put in the time for strength training during the off-season. It’s been great to see the progress made in the gym and in the weight room. We had a great summer of hoops playing in team camps and competitive leagues. We need to take that experience into this season and keep working towards playing our best team ball.“
PHD: What style of basketball will your team play?
“We feel this team has the potential to play at a high level when pacing the game offensively and applying solid defensive pressure. This team has prided themselves on their defense and making that our identity. We want to play in space offensively and allow our players to make plays.“
PHD: Who are some of the top teams in Region 2?
“Region 2: Sioux Valley and Hamlin will return experienced teams with a balance of talent.“
PHD: Who is your top player to look out for?
Trey Maaland (2024) |6-1 G| 13.4 ppg 3.8 rpg 2.8 apg 2.7 spg
“Trey is a very good athlete who can guard multiple positions. He can score in a variety of ways and has become a very consistent player who continues to take his game to the next level. He led the varsity last season in steals and was our co-leading scorer. Trey was selected to the Northeast Conference 2nd Team and the Lake Central Conference Team last year. We look forward to Trey having a great senior season and will help lead the up-and-comers.“
