The Chiefs bring back a ton of experience, skill, and depth. They also have a good coach and PHD will not be surprised if the Chiefs make a run to the State Tournament this March! See below for more info on the Chiefs from Crazy Horse.

Q&A with coach James Bagwell
PHD: Could you write a couple sentences summing up last season?
“We won 17 games and we played in the two Championship Games, one at LNI and one at the Dakota Oyate Tournament. We were able to make it to our first SoDak 16 game in school history, which was a great experience. We definitely gained some momentum going into our off-season. We lost in the SoDak 16 to eventual 3-time Class B Champions De Smet.“
PHD: How did the offseason go for your team/program?
“We had a great off-season, quite a few of my guys played AAU and on travel teams. We also played in the Rapid City Stevens league and in the South Dakota School of Mines team camp. We competed against and beat some good teams this summer. Every summer we focus on skill development, strength, and mobility. A lot of our guys spent a lot of time in the gym this summer getting reps in.“
PHD: Who are a few of your top players to look out for?
Noah Iron Horse Noah Iron Horse 6'3" | SG Crazy Horse | 2024 State SD , Guard, 6’3, Senior
“Noah is our returning leading scorer from last year’s team he averaged 23.1 ppg 6 rpg 4 apg, and 3.5 spg. Noah also holds the school’s single-game scoring record with 50 points scored against Takini last season.“
“Noah has tremendous basketball instincts. He can score the ball in a variety of ways and impact the defensive end with his anticipation skills. He will be looked on to do much of the same as last year but be better. We are not as big as we were yesterday so like everyone else Noah will have to rebound more. No one is talking about him for All-State but I believe he is a clear-cut All-Stater. Noah is also 250 points away from his 1,000th point.“
Richard Pumpkin Seed Richard Pumpkin Seed 5'9" | CG Crazy Horse | 2024 State SD , Guard, 5’9, Senior
“Richard is a great floor leader, he plays with toughness. Last year he averaged 16.5 ppg, 4 rpg, 6 apg, and 3.1 spg. He runs our offense and defends really well.“
“Richard had come on strong for us offensively down the stretch of the season averaging 25 ppg with a 38-point outburst at Bennett County. Richard is a natural slasher but his ability to shoot the ball came on strong as the season went on last year. I expect some of the same things at a higher level this season.“
Donnie Ghost Dog Donnie Ghost Dog 5'10" | CG Crazy Horse | 2026 State SD , Guard, 5’9, Sophomore
“Donnie averaged 10 ppg, 4 apg, and 2.1 spg last year. Donnie played big in the postseason last year by leading us in scoring with 20 points in our Regional final game at Philip. Donnie has had the most impressive off-season this summer. He has improved his game dramatically. He is a lethal three-level scorer and I look for him to have a big year. Donnie has been playing varsity for me since the 8th grade. He is young but has a lot of varsity and big-game experience.“
Devaughn Between Lodges Devaughn Between Lodges 6'0" | CG Crazy Horse | 2025 State SD , Guard, 6’0, Junior
“Devaughn started some games and played the 6th man role for us last year he averaged 8 ppg 3 rpg, and 2 spg. Devaughn has tremendous speed, athleticism, and is a ball hawk defensively. I felt last year he was very talented but just needed some experience. I have watched him work all summer and fall he has improved his game a lot. I believe he will have a big year for us.“
Jerimiah Killz In Water, Guard, 6’1, Junior
“Jerimiah is a transfer student. He played with us during the summer and he fit right in. High basketball I.Q., makes the right plays, defends, and also can drive and shoot the basketball. A great addition to the program.“
Jacob High Horse, Forward, 6’2, Junior
“Jacob played a huge role with our junior varsity last year. I expect Jacob to step in and provide some depth and good minutes for the varsity this season. He had a great off-season, he got stronger and more skilled. He knows his role and how to help this team be successful this year.“
Bradley Martin, Forward, 6’3, Junior
“Bradley can shoot the ball from the perimeter. We will need Bradley to rebound and defend the interior. He has made some improvements this off-season, he is more confident and coming into his own as a player.“
Dewayne Thunder Shield, Center, 6’2, Junior
“Dewayne rebounds well and defends the paint well. We will need him to play big and rebound this year.“
Kaydo Hornbeck, Gaurd, 5’9, Sophmore
“Kato defends really well, he has also improved on the offensive end this off-season.“
PHD: Who are a couple of up-and-comers to look out for in the near future?
Tyrell Ashely Tyrell Ashely 5'10" | CG Crazy Horse | 2027 SD , Guard, 5’10, Freshman
“Tyrell played up last year as an 8th grader. He is very athletic and attacks the basket really well. If he can develop and get some experience as the season goes on, I can see him serving a valuable role down the stretch of the season.“
Falcon Quiver Falcon Quiver 5'8" | CG Crazy Horse | 2026 State SD , Guard, 5’8, Sophomore
“Falcon can really shoot the ball and defend at a high level. I have been impressed with him this off season and with our fall workouts. As he develops and gets more experience he is going to be a really good player.“
Truman Randall, Guard, 5’8, Freshman
“Truman is an incoming freshman. Truman can shoot the ball from the 3 and get to the basket. The experience he will gain this year will be imperative to his development.“
Ayden Dull Knife, Guard, 5’9, Freshman
“Ayden is a very athletic guard. He can defend and shoot the 3 well. This year of experience will be very valuable for his development. Looking forward to his athletic journey.“
PHD: What style of basketball will your team play?
“We will play really fast which is to our advantage. We will pressure the ball on defense and push the ball on offense. Space and pace!”
PHD: What are a couple of your team goals this year?
“We would like to finish #1 in our Region which will be valuable for post-season seeding. We would like to win LNI and DOC tournaments. After feeling that environment of the SoDak 16 and experiencing being 1 game away from the State Tournament. Our goal is to get over the hump and get to that Tournament with an opportunity to play for a State Championship.“
PHD: Who are some of the top teams in your Region?
“Region 7B is always tough. White River is always up there, and I feel Philip will be good as well. I wouldn’t sleep on Jones County they had a formidable season last year and return quite a few guys.“
Best of luck to the Chiefs this season!
