Here are 3 takeaways from the Mustangs’ win over the Wildcats:
Frison has to be on the floor
Freshman point guard Justin Frison was poised Tuesday night in his first varsity basketball game. Hamilton couldn’t rattle Frison with its defensive pressure. Frison did a solid job of penetrating into the middle of the paint, communicating to his teammates on the floor, and taking care of the basketball. Offensively, he had just six points, but was the facilitator (nine assists) he needed to be on a night senior Kylan Clark had 29 points, while junior wing Keron Jackson Jr. added 17 points.
Frison is Houston’s best decision maker, and for the remainder of the season, he has to be on the floor.
McGee is it for Hamilton
Devan McGee is Hamilton’s best player, and it’s not up for debate. The 6-5 junior wing kept the Wildcats competitive in the first half. He scored 10 of his 32 points in the first quarter alone. McGee, who also had 11 rebounds, three steals, and two blocks, knocked down a 3 from the top of the key early in the second quarter to tie the game 15-all before his team was outscored 24-14. He made shots from the perimeter and was able to get into the paint. It was a lopsided loss, but the Wildcats have their guy moving forward.
Myles needs to be aggressive
Freshman wing Jordan Myles didn’t sit on the perimeter and shoot a lot of jumpers in Tuesday’s season opener. The 6-5 wing finished with nine points and did a great job of crashing the boards. Myles was very aggressive on the boards and used his frame to score over the smaller Hamilton defenders. If Myles can continue to be aggressive and take advantage of what the defenders gives him, he’s going to help the Mustangs be in position to win a lot of games this season.
