John Hartman (Saxony Lutheran): A 6’4″ shooting guard from the SEMO area who was one of the top perimeter marksmen that I watched at the showcase. Whether it was in the shooting drills or during live action, he had a nice smooth stroke with extended range and a quick release. He was constantly moving and getting himself open. He also had some good footwork when he caught the ball inside to get buckets in the low post.
Caden Nichols (Newton, IL): A 6’3″ wing player from Southern Illinois who was fundamentally sound and capable of impacting the game in a number of ways on offense. He has very good playmaking skills with his ability to handle the pass the ball. He has very good athleticism and he showed with his elevation on his mid-range jumper. He is a strong finisher when he gets into the lane and he can also knock down the open 3-pointer.
Tristan Diaz (DSSI, CO): A 6’2″ guard from the Denver area who plays with a strong motor to go along with his good athleticism. He was always on the move and putting himself in good position to make good hustle plays like offensive rebounds and steals. He was also good at getting to loose balls. He is a very unselfish player who was looking for open teammates with the pass. He was also a very effective cutter off the ball and he got layups as a result.
Jessie Bates (Lanphier, IL): A talented 5’10” point guard from the Springfield (IL) area who is an excellent floor general with a pass first mentality. He had tremendous court vision to go along with his nice feel for the game. He was dropping some impressive dimes from multiple angles on the court. He ran the fast break well and could also hit open teammates in the half court in their comfort spots. He could also score on penetrating drives to the basket and also hit open 3-pointers.
Rakim Higgerson (Lanphier, IL): A 6’2″ guard from the Springfield area who has physical strength and he plays with a strong motor. He was at his best when he was attacking the basket and scoring on tough drives in the lane. He used his body well as he was looking to seek contact whenever he got inside the lane. He could also hit the open 3-point shot, which was of the line drive variety.
Jaden Love (Carbondale, IL): A 6’2″ wing player from Southern Illinois who had the most impressive motor that I witnessed at the event. He plays much bigger than his actual size because of his relentless effort and willingness to attack the basket whenever he had the ball. He was strong at getting downhill on the drive and also posting up and using his strength to score inside. He was also an excellent rebounder who put in a strong effort on the defensive end.
Jaykri Whitfield (DuQuoin, IL): A solid guard from Southern Illinois who displayed good defensive instincts with his anticipation and ability to sit down and move his feet. He did a good job of keeping opposing ball handlers in front of him. He had a nice runner in the lane on the dribble and 3-point range to go along with it.
