Here are the prospects that stood out:
Kameron Bowers, West Creek: The junior guard was one of the bright spots at the guard spot on Saturday. Bowers did a great job pushing the basketball in transition, scoring in transition, and making the extra pass. He made shots from the perimeter. A plus for Bowers is his craftiness with the basketball. He didn’t have a problem going past the opposing defender.
Sheldon Huber, Clarksville: Huber, a 2025 prospect, was on the same team with Bowers. The 6-foot-3 guard made solid passes in transition. Huber showed off his shot-making ability, draining shots from 17-feet out to the 3-point line. Huber can get up and down the floor with ease.
Elijah Lussier, Collierville: The senior forward showed promise on Saturday that he could be the Dragons’ best player this upcoming season. Lussier can play with his back to the basket. He has developed a jump hook. Lussier isn’t afraid to crash the boards. He can also make shots from 15-feet out.
Maguire Evans, Cleveland: The junior guard can do more than just shoot the basketball. Let’s just get that out of the way first. Evans can make outlet passes on the break. He communicates with his teammates on the floor. Evans encourages his teammates after a mistake. It’s called leadership, and Evans has it.
Not shocked
Junior wing Jayden Jones had a lot of highlight reels on Saturday. Jones had a number of one-handed dunks on the break, ending one scrimmage with a windmill slam. Rhett Broussard, Jones’s teammate at Goodpasture, was lighting it up from 3-point range. The lefty can stroke it from the perimeter.
Good potential
Junior guard Timothy Matthews has potential to be a solid prospect at the guard spot. At 6-foot-4, Matthews play both guard positions because of his ability to score and see the floor. He can finish at the rim. If he can put everything together, Matthews will be talked about more in this class by the end of the 2023 season.
Early look: Raleigh-Egypt Pharaohs
Raleigh-Egypt is returning everything from last season and should be competitive team in 2023 under head coach Joe Washington. The Pharaohs will have senior wing Cassie Bullard as their No. 1 option on offense. He can score it from different areas on the court.
Twin brothers, Jeremiah and Josiah Ward, will provide experience as seniors. Both are tough and play with an edge. Junior point guard Ashton Garrett will provide much-needed depth at the guard spot. He brings competitiveness and energy on both ends of the floor.
Seniors Jewell Smith, Demarion Lewis, and Khylan Payne all bring size and athleticism to Raleigh-Egypt. Smith loves to attack the basket. He can help with spacing because of his ability to make shots from 3-point range Payne, once he’s off the football field, should help with rebounding, shot-altering, and points in the paint. Lewis can defend multiple positions on the floor, can finish at the rim, and rebound at a solid clip.
