Fellow Prep Hoops writer, and basketball savant, Aaron Burgin, put on his annual event at St. Augustine high school last Saturday. Here’s who stood out in the 2027 Select game.
Arysab Kont, Rancho Bernardo
Kont showed a good balance of playmaking and scoring feel in earning MVP honors for his team in this game. The 5-foot-9 combo guard played with good pace with the ball in his hands, made the right reads out of paint touched and knocked down open catch-and-shoot three’s when he got the opportunity.
Jackson Carpenter Jackson Carpenter 5'9" | PG Del Norte | 2027 CA-S , Del Norte
Carpenter was one of the more difficult players for defenders to keep in front of them due to his combination of quickness, change of speeds and stop-and-go ability in transition. The 5-foot-7 incoming freshman showed great feel as a primary ball handler and playmaker.
Jeremiah Justice, Rancho Buena Vista
Justice was an efficient three-level scorer in this event and flashed great feel out of ball screen action when choosing when to dish or find a bucket for himself. The 6-foot combo guard stretched the floor to the three-point line, knocked down smooth pull-up jumpers and was a crafty finisher around the basket.
Luke Bareh, Rancho Christian
Bareh earned MVP honors for his team because of his ability to fill up the scoring column in a variety of ways. The 5-foot-11 combo guard played with great feel and pace off the dribble, showed a quick burst of speed to blow by his primary defender and get into the lane where finished with creativity around the basket. What separated Bareh in this game was his ability to know down the three-ball off the dribble.
Austin Brown, Coronado
Despite being one of the smaller players in this game, Brown carried himself with a ton of confidence and it showed in his creativity off the dribble and ability to make plays for himself and teammates in transition. The 5-foot-7 point guard flashed a quick and efficient handle, a smooth three-point shot off the dribble and a craftiness around the basket when finishing.
