The event featured high level competition and great games, as well as prospects for colleges of all levels moving forward.
Here’s a look at part two of some of the top 2024 performers from the VA schools at the event.
Damon Thompson Damon Thompson 6'0" | PG John Marshall | 2024 State VA | 6’1” PG | John Marshall
Thompson has been a staple for JM over the past few years on their rise to national prominence, and he stepped up big against one of the top guards in the country showing why the JMU commit is ready to run this team against their national schedule. Thompson is a natural scorer at the point guard position, fitting the new mold that the primary ball handler can also be the primary scorer as well. He showed his great footwork off the bounce to get to his spots, he made shots from multiple levels efficiently and he got downhill and finished or drew contact to get to the line often too.
Brennan Chatman Brennan Chatman 6'3" | SF Norfolk Collegiate | 2024 State VA | 6’2” CG | Norfolk Collegiate
Chatman has quietly been one of the top guards in the 757 over the past few years, and coming off of a big summer with Team Loaded 757 he looked confident and made winning plays on both ends of the floor for his NoCo team. Chatman is a high energy and high motor guard who gets after it on both ends of the floor, and he showed his willingness to play within multiple roles to help his team. He has great instincts on both ends of the floor, he scored the ball efficiently working off the ball to get open and cutting for easy buckets and he did the dirty work fighting for loose balls and rebounding well for his position.
Dezmond Hopkins Dezmond Hopkins 6'0" | CG Patriot | 2024 State VA | 6’0” PG | Patriot
There aren’t many guards in the state that have the resume of Hopkins, as he’s been an integral part of this Patriot team that has been one of the teams in the state and made a deep run in the state tournament last year. He showed those leadership qualities at the Fall Series, as he was their top scorer and competed on both ends of the floor while also getting others involved throughout their two games. He’s a natural scorer who can create space off the bounce, he’s a competitor who gets after it on both ends of the floor and he will be their rock this year as they will be a favorite to win the VHSL Class 6 State Championship.
Teyvien Barbour Teyvien Barbour 6'5" | SG Patriot (VA) | 2024 State #298 Nation VA | 6’4” WG | Patriot
Barbour comes over from Osbourn where he established himself as one of the top shooters in NOVA, and he joins an already talented Patriot group that needed someone just like him to make a run at a state championship. The Harvard commit showed his ability to work off the ball to get open and set his feet quickly to get his shot off, and he shot the ball very well from deep with effortless range and great form. His ability to set his feet on the move and the fact that he doesn’t get tired working off the ball to get open is impressive, and he also finds ways to impact the game on the defensive end too.
Isaiah Vick Isaiah Vick 6'7" | PF Patriot | 2024 State VA | 6’7” F | Patriot
Vick has been a very good player for Patriot and someone that we identified three years ago in the Fall Series, and he has steadily improved and is starting to turn the corner to look like he’ll be one of the best forwards in the NOVA area this year. At 6’7” he’s a versatile player who is a good athlete and can play and guard multiple positions, and he’s a walking mismatch with his ball skills on the perimeter and the high motor he plays with. He can make shots from deep, he can size up defenders off the bounce and he’s a good rebounder and defender as well.
Ryan Gornwalk | 6’4” WF | S3 Academy
The newer school out of Petersburg has already produced multiple collegiate prospects, and they came ready to compete with a short roster but guys like Gornwalk got after it and competed with the best. He was their most consistent player as he showed a good motor and competed on both ends, and he showed a solid all-around skillset offensively as he scored it in different ways. He got downhill and played well through contact, he made shots from deep off the catch and he came up big when his team needed him to.
Pape Cunthe | 6’7” F | S3 Academy
While Gornwalk was their most consistent player, Cunthe showed flashes of brilliance that was very impressive and would intrigue quite a few college coaches when they get eyes on him. While he’s still relatively raw, he has a good base skillset as he can put it on the deck and get to spots and he showed an inside-out game that makes him very hard to matchup with. He ran the floor hard in transition, he showed good athleticism as a finisher and a rebounder and he made shots from deep and the midrange as well.
Lanier Young | 6’5” F | LC Bird
This is a new look Bird team from the past few years, and while many will wonder how they will do they won both games against two of the best public school teams in the event and saw guys like Young make big strides from Session 1 a few weeks ago. Young has the chance to be a breakout player in the Richmond area, with his multifaceted game that makes him a mismatch and his athleticism that allows him to play against taller players in the paint. He showed his ability to step out and knock down shots from deep, he showed he can switch defensively and guard multiple positions and the more confident he’s getting the more productive he’s being on both ends of the floor.
