On July 29th I attended the Hoopers On1y Hoop Life tournament located at the Phhacility and the Kroc Center in Phx, AZ.

I focused most of my attention on the younger groups of 15 and 16U but saw a couple 17U games.

Here were the freshmen and 8th grade guard standouts that caught my eye:

[player_tooltip player_id='2107238' first='Dominic' last='Hawkins'] AZ Compass Prep

A quick point guard is a good passer and plays with a high feel for the game. He likes getting downhill and is very good in the open court. He can jet thru and score on tough layups in traffic or will dime his teammates with a high IQ for the game.

[player_tooltip player_id='2109031' first='Connor' last='Koester'] Desert Vista (All Stars 15)

A scoring guard puts up points multiple ways. He has a shifty handle to get to the basket and uses advanced post footwork to score. He has a sneaky quick handle to burst by his defender and make tough shots at the basket and he isn't afraid to work versus taller players. He can back down his man and score it as well.

[player_tooltip player_id='2109033' first='Anthony' last='Ruinard III'] Hamilton (All Stars 15)

A shooting guard can get hot from the perimeter. He will catch and shoot from the three point line and can also get to the rim. He is a good defender who hustles and will run the court with high effort on both sides of the ball.

[player_tooltip player_id='2109034' first='OJ' last='Wilkinson'] Coronado (The Dons 14)

A long and skinny shooting guard is a lefty sniper. He has range and will rattle in triples. He gives hard ball fakes and is quick enough to get to the basket to score with good body control versus the post players.

[player_tooltip player_id='2107119' first='Cristian' last='Jimenez'] Hamilton (AZ RUN N GUN 15) (Pictured)

A pure point guard has a high feel for the game. He makes plays and is a real lead guard. He always seems to be around the ball and is just as good with his left as his right hand. He made multiple live dribble passes and gives ball fakes and will blow by his defender.

[player_tooltip player_id='2109038' first='Nate' last='Tainsky'] Hamilton (AZ RUN N GUN 15)

A long and lanky scoring guard is a good shooter who knows how to play. He is one of the incoming freshman that may get moved up to JV. He can shoot threes, handles the ball well, he runs the court, makes plays for his teammates and is a next level thinker.

[player_tooltip player_id='2109028' first='Malachi' last='Kaffey'] AZ Compass

The son of a coach is a throwback pure point guard. He is a natural dimer who always looks to facilitate. He can shoot the three and burst into the paint. He is undersized but a ball hawk on defense and looks to make plays for his teammates.
