The TSSAA 2023-24 high school basketball season is getting closer and more prospects will be added.
And of course, movements will be made.
Before the season gets here, let’s dive into seven prospects who could move up in the next installment.
JaDyn Lee, Munford: The 6-foot-0 point guard is currently No. 68 and will need to have a solid junior season to be in consideration to possibly crack the top 50. What will he need to do? First, get his team into the offense, make the right reads, and take care of the basketball. Those are the things a point guard has to do in order for a program to be successful. Oh, yeah, Lee needs to knock down open shots and use his quick, first-step to go past defenders. He took care of business during the summer. Lee just needs to continue the high ride he’s been on.
Eli Patrick, Munford: Patrick debuted at No. 103. The 5-11 shooting guard is a reliable ball handler and knockdown shooter. Playing alongside JaDyn Lee and senior wing Murray Norman will provide Patrick the opportunities to showcase his ability as a legit offensive threat since both of his teammates are going to get a lot of attention from opposing teams. Patrick doesn’t need to led the team in scoring. He will just need to score efficiently within the offense.
Tarecous Stevens, Fayette Ware: Stevens won’t be playing alongside Damarien Yates this upcoming season. More responsibility will be coming his way. In 2023, Stevens, at No. 63, will need to show he’s capable of knocking down shots at a high clip from the perimeter. His ball handles will need to show at times. Stevens will need to display mental toughness. Last season, the 6-5 wing showed a small sample size of what he could be: a rim protector, second-chance points opportunist, and fearless. Stevens could use some muscle as well. Upper body strength will take him a long way.
Tacarien Freeman, Fayette Ware: Freeman is right outside of the top 20 at No. 22. There’s no questioning Freeman’s mental and physical toughness. There’s no questioning his hunger for winning. For the past two seasons, Freeman has been more in a reserve role. In 2023, he’s going to have to be the captain of the ship. Freeman’s leadership will be very important to the Wildcats’ success. In a sectional game last season at Haywood, Freeman carried Fayette Ware offensively. So, the attributes are there. It’s all on Freeman to capitalize off last season’s success and lead the Wildcats back to Murfreesboro, TN.
Sam Mewborn, Franklin: Mewborn knows how to play basketball the right way. The 6-2 guard takes a lot of quality shots. He’s currently at No. 97 and has had a solid summer to be considered a stock riser. Mewborn is a key piece for the Admirals. A productive season shooting the ball well will definitely bump him up. Mewborn can light the court on fire when he’s feeling it.
Quaylan Hampton, Fayette Ware: Hampton hasn’t played a lot of varsity basketball like a lot of his peers have. He’s right outside of the top 100 at No. 106, but things can change for him. Hampton’s summer with Boom City Elite and the Wildcats showed promise that he could be a solid piece to a winning program. He won’t have to shoulder a lot of responsibility at Fayette Ware, thanks to seniors Jeremiah Hayes and Eric Jones and junior point guard Tacarien Freeman Tacarien Freeman 5'10" | PG Fayette Ware | 2025 State TN leading the way, but he will need to provide some scoring and run the offense when Freeman is either on the bench or off the ball.
Corbin Bowling Corbin Bowling 5'10" | PG Fayette Academy | 2025 State TN , Fayette Academy: Bowling is a walking bucket, a guaranteed 20 points each time he steps onto the floor. He will have to be the best player for the Vikings each night the team plays. Bowling, at No. 111, knows that. That’s the reality of it. He’s the best player and the most important one. Bowling is a talented, tough kid. He will just need to continue to be great for Fayette Academy and not take his foot off the gas. Individually, Bowling should have one of the best statistical seasons in West Tennessee in 2023.
