Continue ReadingWe have nearly completed a busy summer on the grassroots basketball scene. Most teams are either calling it quits or playing one final weekend up at the GRBA National Championship in Fort Wayne. After traveling nearly every weekend to cover various events across the country it is time to settle in and get our prospect rankings updated. We’ve already released our new 2025 and 2026 rankings. Now, it is time to unveil our updated Class of 2024 prospect rankings. With this update the Class of 2024 Prospect Rankings sits at a Top 150 while our Watch List grew to nearly 150 additional names. Before diving into the release, let’s go over a few very important points as it comes to rankings.
First off, as is always the case, these are PROSPECT rankings not PRODUCTION rankings. There are a couple of prospects in the Top 25 who haven’t averaged double-figures at the varsity level yet while there are others in the 125-150 range who have already scored 1,000 points in their high school careers. This is probably the hardest concept for folks to understand. We are projecting players to the college level and not ranking based solely on what their impact at the high school level may be. Also, not all high school experiences are created equally. We cover everyone from small, rural Class 1A prospects to large, metropolitan Class 4A prospects, and everyone in between. However, that doesn’t mean 15 points per game at a small school is “better” than 8 points per game at a large school. It isn’t an apples to apples comparison. That is why we are in the gym as much as we are to get actual, in person, evaluations prior to our rankings.
Secondly, it is understandable that a large downward move in your ranking can be disheartening. However, it doesn’t mean you got worse. Instead, it is usually a matter of getting better, more thorough evaluations on others and realizing they are better than we originally thought. Try to not take it personally, because it certainly isn’t personal on that end. The goal of updating multiple times a year is to constantly become more and more accurate. Now that these prospects are entering their senior seasons the goal is to have fewer large shifts in the rankings going forward. That isn’t always the case though. Evaluations become more thorough and evolve over time and that can sometimes cause a “recalibration” in the rankings.
Third, it is true, that rankings really don’t matter. I know that is a bit of cliche and I understand why they matter to players…that is why I spend countless hours evaluating prospects and then pour over all information time and time again to put out the most accurate ranking possible. I know it matters to YOU. However, they don’t matter much at all to the people who actually matter…college coaches. When a college coach asks me about a prospect they don’t look to see what he is ranked and I don’t look before I respond. Evaluations matter…rankings don’t.
Finally, this is especially true with the 2024 class, but specific ranking is never as important as the “tier” you are in. Again, I know that is easy to say and not as easy to take when you are in the shoes of the prospect. However, the database I send privately to college coaches with evaluations, contact info, academic info, etc. does NOT have rankings. It is simply tiered “high-major”, “mid-major”, “low-major”, “Division II”, etc. etc. Genuinely from about #50 to even beyond #100 there is very little difference. Most of those players are going to be recruited by the same places and end up playing at the same/similar levels. So, if you are ranked #87 should you “actually” be #72? Maybe. However, I’ve done this for over a decade now and spend a LOT of time in the gym and spend a LOT of time making these as accurate as possible. I know they matter to the players and that means they matter to me.
I am always very transparent when it comes to rankings. My email address is coachbrandonramsey@gmail.com or you can find me on Twitter @BRamseyKSR. While I consult with a few trusted friends across the industry, these are ultimately 100% decided by me personally. Reach out to me if you have any questions or if you would like to submit information to be considered at the next update. We do these 3-4 times a year because we know it is an inexact science. There will always be someone flying under-the-radar. However, we at Prep Hoops Indiana, do as good of a job as possible covering every single corner of the state and find good players from high-major Division I prospects to Division III prospects and everything in between.
Now, without further ado, let’s dive on in to our updated, and expanded, Prep Hoops Indiana Class of 2024 Prospect Rankings!
