The opening games of the event weren’t live to Division 1 college coaches but some media types and Division 2 coaches were in the gym evaluating the prospects. Below are some of the top performers we watched.
Darnez Slater Darnez Slater 6'1" | PG Roosevelt | 2024 State #216 Nation CA-S , 2024, Roosevelt
Slater was one of the hotter names in college recruiting after the June live periods and that should carry over into July. At 6-feet-3, the rising senior has the skills and tools to play both on or off the ball, lending to his combo guard recruit-ability. Slater was taking advantage of the open court and fast pace of the event as he got to the rim and finished at-will in transition and knocked down open catch and shoot threes.
Deshawn Gory Deshawn Gory 6'8" | SF Red Rock Academy | 2024 NV , 2024, Oak Hills
Gory is a highly-regarded prospect in SoCal’s 2024 class. His recruitment has stagnated a bit due to him being ineligible last season due to CIF transfer rules but on Wednesday he flashed all of the things that made him one of the region’s highest-upside prospects. Gory is a long, rangy and athletic wing who thrives in transition settings. He’s a lob threat around the rim, can knock down the open catch and shoot three-ball and has dribble-drive and finishing skills in his arsenal.
Isaiah Bernard Isaiah Bernard 6'5" | SF Foothill | 2024 State CA-S , 2024, Foothill
Bernard is an increasingly intriguing prospect due to his combination of size, length, skill and athleticism. The 6-foot-4 wing has all the tools and physical traits to be a Division 1 wing and his ability to get downhill and finish above the rim also lend to that notion. Bernard got into the paint and to the rim whenever he wanted on Wednesday night and finished at an efficient clip.
Isaiah Chappell Isaiah Chappell 6'9" | PF South Kent | 2024 State New E , Post-Grad, South Kent (CT)
Chappell was one of the better big men in SoCal’s 2023 class and his recruitment should pick up even more now that he’s taking a prep year. The 6-foot-8 forward showed great touch from the perimeter as he knocked down catch and shoot three’s in a variety of settings from trailing to play to pick and pops and wing spot ups.
Jaden Hubbard Jaden Hubbard 6'3" | SG Orange Lutheran | 2024 State CA-S , 2024, Orange Lutheran
Hubbard was up there among the best pure shooters in the event. The wiry 6-foot-3 shooting guard has deep and consistent range from multiple spots of the floor, can hit consistently off the catch or off of a shot fake and one-dribble side step. Hubbard has smooth, fundamental and repeatable shooting mechanics.
