Ferris St Elite Camp: Fab Five

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The 2019 Division II National Champions. Ferris St held the first of two elite exposure camps this past Sunday. As always it produced a deep and talented field of prospects from across the state of Michigan. Following are five that caught my eye. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1140336' first='Trevor' last='Zamarron'] 6-1 2024 Greenville </strong>I could try and be complex and long winded in describing this young man's performance. Let's just break it down like this. Simply put one the better performances at an elite camp I have seen in a while. Put on a completely lights out shooting performance. If he was putting it up it was going in. But it was more than just shooting. Used a tight handle to be in complete control of every scrimmage he was in. Including the top 10 showcase to close out the camp. Penetrated to the basket without the fear. Powerfully exploded to the rim off of two feet. Wasn't just a pump with a hot hand. Willing passer who found the open man off drives. Coming off a good spring with MBA. If he continues to play like he did Sunday. Is going to get an offer from someone. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1112310' first='Drew' last='Kozel'] 6-5 2024 L'Anse Creuse North </strong>A mature and composed player who has been a staple of both grassroots and elite camp circuits for the last four years. Has transitioned nicely from a post prospect in the beginning. Into the present incarnation as a versatile wing with a diverse skill set. Really doesn't have a hole in his game. Also tested a little better athletically than I thought he would. Had one the higher verticals in the camp. Plays at his own pace and isn't going to get sped up. Coming off a good spring with DTO Elite on the Under Armour circuit. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1453409' first='BJ' last='Walker'] 6-2 2025 Zeeland East (pictured) </strong>Tested as the best athlete in the camp in almost every category. However more importantly played like it. Had the highest vertical at 31 inches. When the camp switched to the 5-on-5 scrimmages. Took off literally and figuratively. Kicked things off with a dunk in transition. Continued to dunk just about everything when he got close to the rim. Used his explosion and lateral quickness to be a factor defensive end. The only demerit would be a suspect outside shooting touch. However as a 2025 prospect has plenty of time to smooth that out. I shouldn't be too dour on that front. He did have a nice step back three. The shot just looked a little flat at times. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1434244' first='Luke' last='Gelow'] 6-4 2024 Gaylord </strong>While Walker tested with the highest vertical. Gelow earned the silver. If you have seen him play that is not surprising at all. Bouncy wing got the rim at will. Is able to contort his body into unique finishing positions. Also similar to Walker the only thing really missing is a consistent outside shot. I will never be considered a “shot doctor”. However I think his issues are both fixable and mechanical. Shoots from across his body. Causing an odd spin and rotation. If he can smooth out that area of his game. This is a Northern Michigan prospect who can compete with anyone in the state athletically. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>[player_tooltip player_id='1787594' first='Kyle' last='McGowan'] 6-6 2025 Cadillac </strong>Gelow wasn't the only Big North Conference product doing work on Sunday. McGowan might not be the most lauded member of a deep and talented Viking program. Made a statement Sunday to be considered with that group. Has plenty size and country strong strength. Wasn't afraid to battle down on the block against a field brimming with size. Not a wing at this point of his development. Probably won't be. That being said. I was impressed with his ability to drive. Did it out of the high post and from the baseline. Not all brute strength. Finished those drives off with a soft touch around the basket. </p> <!-- /wp:paragraph -->
