Due to some extensive off season school construction projects. This year’s iteration is a little smaller than normal. However still producing a competitive and deep field. Following are seven players that caught my attention from day 2 action.
Evan Haverkamp Evan Haverkamp 6'9" | PF McBain | 2024 State MI 6-8 2024 McBain Along with Cadillac’s Charlie Howell Charlie Howell 6'5" | PF Cadillac | 2024 State MI and the Yeager twins lister below. One of the high profile prospects in the field. Easily the biggest player in the field. Due to a scheduling mix up. Began a game against Traverse City Central with only five players. Even with the limited lineup had his way down low on the block against a big squad. However that is to be expected. Is simply too big and skilled for most Northern Michigan opponents. What was new was the improvement in overall ball skills. Had a big time block on a perimeter contest (not new) Followed by taking the rebound and going coast-to-coast with a confident dribble (new) Finished off the night by showing improved elevation to the rim with a powerful dunk. Just a country strong hoss of a prospect. Could make a college coach in the right system happy.
Kyle McGowan Kyle McGowan 6'7" | PF Cadillac | 2025 State MI 6-6 2025 Cadillac Speaking of county strong hoss prospects. McGowan followed up a solid performance at the Ferris Elite camp. With a dominant two day performance in his own gym. Appears to enjoy contact on the block. However balances that with a soft touch around the basket. Even nailed a confident three. Finished above the rim with multiple dunks in transition. Will form a big and versatile front line with fellow 2025 Gavin Goetz Gavin Goetz 6'5" | PF Cadillac | 2025 State MI .
MJ Yeager and Donny Yeager 5-10 2024 Saginaw Nouvel (pictured) It was in this same gym two summers ago. That a coach pulled me aside and pointed these twins to me. Told me that when they grow a little they would be special players. Said they were already two of the better shooters he had seen. That coach was only partially correct. Yes they they have grown a bit. And yes they are also outstanding shooters. However he was selling them short a little in their development. They are both are legitimate floor generals to go along with the shooting prowess. Playing like seasoned veterans in pick and roll situations. They both excel in passing off the dribble with excellent court vision. Coming off an excellent spring with The Program. Their recruitments could take off in the next few months.
Landon Kulawiak Landon Kulawiak 6'3" | CG Buckley | 2025 State MI 6-3 2025 Buckley Has rightly earned reputation as a big time shooter. However I was impressed with other aspects of his game. Did a nice job of finding open teammates as defenses collapsed on him. Also did this distribution while his shot wasn’t falling. Finding other ways to impact the game is the sign of a maturing player. Playing in his first game of the summer with a new coach and a new system. Looked very comfortable as the primary initiator of the offense. The lefty has a herky jerky type of game. But it is a very effective. Continues to trend towards being on of the top players in Northern Michigan from the 2025 class.
Brendan Slack Brendan Slack 6'4" | SG Traverse City Central | 2026 State MI 6-4 2026 Traverse City Central Speaking of herky jerky but effective wing games. Wednesday was the best I had seen Slack play. Shot it very well from beyond the arc. Had about four threes in the game I watched. It’s an unorthodox but effective release. Repeatable mechanics as well. Shot works due to his size and ball handling ability. The handle is quirky like his shot. However once again it’s effective and he gets to his spots easily. Still appears to be growing into his body. Coming off a good spring with Michigan Unified on the Adidas Circuit. Part of a young class of Trojans that will give Central a very bright future.
Cooper Wagner 5-9 2026 Saginaw Swan Valley Intriguing but small point guard prospect. Plays with confidence and composure you don’t often see in a player this young. Has a smooth efficient release from beyond the arc. Operated well in pick and roll situations. Played with his head up and is willing passer. Had a huge scoring game on Tuesday. Competed well against Frankfort’s Carter Kerby on Wednesday. Who is one of the top 2025 guards in Northern Michigan. Swan Valley is more known for its gridiron exploits. Wagner along with some other good young guards could change that.
