Here are 5 quick observations from some of the action I saw:
Christian Brothers should be good in 2023
I expect the Purple Wave to be a competitive basketball team over the course of the 2023 season. Under Bubba Luckett, Christian Brothers has always moved the ball extremely well. This version of the Purple Wave will have great ball movement, along with great shooting on the floor. Senior guard Ashton Hudson is a sniper. Junior guard Carson Chandler is a sniper. Sophomore wing Keeper Jackson is another solid shooter. All three prospects can get going at any moment in a contest. With sophomore point guard BJ Brown running the offense, he will definitely have great offensive options spaced out on the floor.
Hayes is a upgrade for BGA
Arnett Hayes is a solid upgrade at the guard spot for Battle Ground Academy. At 6-foot-1, the junior has solid ball handles and is crafty enough with the basketball to live in the paint. Hayes is a dependable shot maker from the perimeter. The transfer from Webb School will definitely help his new program win a lot of games this upcoming season.
Jones is a handful
Senior forward Kavien Jones is a force to be reckon with in the post and on the perimeter. The 6-6 forward can step out and make shots from the perimeter. Jones can put the ball on the floor and finish at the rim. Jones is very active on the glass. Could 2023 be the year Jones is a TSSAA Division II-A Mr. Basketball finalist? That’s highly possible.
Tyler is a much-needed piece for Cordova
For the past two seasons, the Wolfpack’s best player, KJ Tenner, has been seeing double teams and hasn’t had that one teammate to make shots consistently. Heading into Tenner’s senior season, he finally has reliable help. Senior Jay Tyler will be playing alongside Tenner at Cordova this upcoming season. Tenner will be able to breathe throughout games next season, thanks in part to Tyler’s ability to score the basketball. Tenner can finally have the balance of being a scorer and a facilitator. Missouri State commit Julius Thedford will also be a Wolfpack in 2023. Cordova’s head coach Terrance Scales will have a three-headed monster at the guard spot, and it’s real scary.
Graham will have to step into a leadership role for Hillsboro
Junior guard Cortez Graham got a taste of postseason success last season, helping the Burros reach the semifinals round of the TSSAA Division I Class 4A Boys’ State Tournament. Losing Thaddeus Johnson hurts, meaning the 6-4 guard will have to take on a bigger role in 2023 if Hillsboro wants to play deep into the season.
“A lot of guys on our team don’t really know what it’s like to have to carry a team,” Graham said after scrimmaging Cordova. “Once I help them come along, we will be fine.”
