The first session of the Aztec Team Camp generally gives local schools a chance to shine before the second session, which attracts higher profile programs from outside of San Diego.
But it was Murrieta Mesa that emerged victorious, securing back-to-back wins against perennial powers Torrey Pines and La Costa Canyon to capture the Session 1 title. Eastlake defeated San Marcos in the B Division title and Corona Santiago defeated Canyon Hills in the C Division title game.
In the next report, we look at the next five standouts from the weekend that was.
Josiah Jefferson Josiah Jefferson 6'4" | SF Mater Dei Catholic | 2024 State CA-S , Sr. W, Mater Dei Catholic
Jefferson’s athleticism and slashing were on full display for the Crusaders. He did a good job on picking his spots to attack in the team’s triangle offense, punishing defenders getting downhill and finishing through contact. But he’s not a brute, as Jefferson showed an improved and shifty handle and solid range on his jump shot.
Jordyn Webster, Jr. G, Eastlake
Webster is rapidly becoming a must-see player for the Titans, the first in a while for the program. The athletic, 6-3+ wing has an explosive first step and can finish through traffic at will. He’s very right hand dominant, and he gets very tunnel visioned when attacking the paint, but his ability to score off the bounce is unmatched in this setting. He’s also got an evolving midrange skillset, with a solid pull-up jumper.
Gerardo Guerrero, Sr. G, San Ysidro
Guerrero suiting up for the Cougars was the buzz of camp, as it appears the team is seeking to get him an additional year of CIF eligibility. The gifted shooter showed off improved athleticism, finishing several plays above the rim. He’s also a very willing passer, finding teammates in transition with clean outlet passes. If he’s able to play next year, the Cougars will have one of the best back courts in the county – again.
Jalen Williams Jalen Williams 6'1" | CG San Marcos | 2026 State CA-S , So. G, San Marcos
It was very hard to pick one San Marcos standout, as the team goes 10 deep and everyone contributes. But Williams, who has stretched out considerably since his freshman year, is the one I’ll highlight. He’s a very smooth scoring and passing point guard with great feel and lets the game come to him. He has improved his handle with his off hand significantly, which makes him even more difficult to guard. Williams needs to become more vocal, but with three years left of high school, there’s time.
Joshua Mayers, Jr. F, Adelanto
Mayers jumped off the page with his length, soft hands, rebounding on both ends and his rim protecting capabilities. He does a great job getting position on the offensive boards and can explode above the rim in tight quarters to finish those plays. As a shot blocker, Mayers has excellent timing and can block shots with either hand.
