The Vikings have a great opportunity to build around their stellar backcourt. Chavez is a reliable three-level scorer who has the size to get to his spots, but is extremely patient and unselfish with the ball. He led the Vikings in multiple statistical categories, with 15.3 PPG (led team) on 49% shooting (3rd on team), 4.6 RPG (led team), 2.0 APG, and 2.3 SPG (led team). Chavez is a very clutch player that has the composure to come up big in late-game situations, and his team trusts him to score when they need it. He can guard multiple positions as his length and speed allow him to keep up with anyone. Moving into next season, the Vikings bring back most of their team, so Chavez will be able to continue his role as the Vikings’ consistent wing who leads their offense.
4. Lukas Turner Lukas Turner 6'2" | SG Santa Fe | 2024 State NM – Santa Fe (9th Overall)
Turner might be the biggest breakout player in New Mexico. He launched himself into the Top 10 with a stellar season that propelled the Demons into the 5A Playoffs. Unfortunately his stats aren’t posted, but he’s a tough shot-maker that can create something out of nothing at all times. His ability to get to the basket is unmatched, as he uses his agility and body control to get his choice of shots near the rim. Turner is an all-around offensive player however, as his jumpshot is deadly, from mid-range and from 3. His elevation when he shoots allows him to get it off over taller defenders. Though Santa Fe loses some key seniors next year, Turner has shown he’s more than capable of leading this team to success, and will continue producing at a high level.
3. Marquise Renfro Marquise Renfro 6'0" | SG Atrisco Heritage | 2024 State NM – Atrisco Heritage (7th Overall)
Renfro is an explosive athlete, with possibly the best size to speed ratio on this list. He has a muscular frame that allows him to bully his way through defenders, but his lateral quickness is impressive, and he utilizes it in driving to the basket. His stats aren’t posted, but Renfro plays a major role for this team. The energy and confidence he brings to this team is instrumental to this team’s success, and it rubs off on his teammates. Atrisco has some of the best team chemistry I’ve ever seen, and Renfro is a major part of it. His defensive presence is invaluable to this team, and he’s able to suffocate ball-handlers. The Jaguars had a great season, making it to the quarterfinals of the 5A Playoffs. Even though they lose 3 of the 5 starters, Renfro will look to continue his dominance into next year as Atrisco will look to make another deep run next year.
2. Daniel Steverson Daniel Steverson 6'2" | SG Cleveland | 2025 #315 Nation NM – Cleveland (3rd Overall)
The 5A District 1 Player of the Year and 5A All-Regular Season First Team member, Steverson was easily one of the top players in New Mexico High School basketball, leading Cleveland to the quarterfinals of the 5A playoffs. An offensive maestro, he averaged 21.2 PPG (9th in state) on 49% from the field, 5.8 RPG, 2.4 APG, and 1.9 SPG. Steverson plays with a certain demeanor that gives him an edge no matter who he’s facing. He can change speeds at will and uses his crafty ball-handling to get to the basket, and he has the body control and strength to finish. Steverson will continue to lead this Cleveland team as they will be one of the frontrunners for the state title next year.
1. Dylan Chavez Dylan Chavez 6'5" | SG La Cueva | 2024 State #268 Nation NM – ABC Prep (2nd Overall)
Chavez is another Division 1 talent that continues to impress as the season goes on. He’s got great size for a shooting guard, and utilizes his frame to get any shot he wants. He’s a true three-level scorer who is a master at shot creation, especially in the mid-range. He can guard any position with his height and length, and play multiple positions as well. Chavez has accumulated a lot of interest from Division 1 programs across the country, and his recent decommitment from New Mexico State University has opened up his recruitment, which will give schools the opportunity to land a very talented and valuable prospect in Chavez.
