10. Jamal Bynum Jamal Bynum 6'0" | PG Rio Rancho | 2023 State NM – Rio Rancho High School (#42 overall)
Previously unranked, Bynum had too good of a season to not be ranked in the top 50. Voted 5A District 1 Defensive Player of the Year and All-Regular Season Defensive 2nd Team, Bynum is easily one of the best defensive point guards in the state, giving every guard he faced problems. He averaged the most minutes per game for the Rams, playing 27.3 minutes per game in 27 games, and averaged 7.0 PPG, 3.1 RPG, 4.1 APG, and a team-high 2.6 SPG. His tenacity and relentlessness on defense stand out among his many other skills, making him well deserved for his accolades, and solidifying himself one of the key contributors on Rio Rancho’s successful team this past year.
9. Josiah Guliford Josiah Guliford 5'10" | PG La Cueva | 2023 State NM – La Cueva High School (#37 overall)
Guliford was a strong leader for a Bears team full of talent, utilizing his finishing abilities to score over larger defenders, and his jumping ability to get up to the rim on offense and defense. He averaged 10.3 PPG and 2.8 APG while playing in every game for La Cueva, while scoring the 2nd most total points on the team. He is a reliable consistent guard who played a large role on this La Cueva team, helping lead the Bears to a spot in the New Mexico 5A Playoffs, and making the 5A New Mexico all-star team in the process. His motor and hustle make him hard to stop with the ball in his hands, and his on-ball defensive abilities make him a threat on both sides of the ball.
8. Malik Barrens Malik Barrens 5'7" | PG Pecos | 2023 State NM – Pecos High School (#30 overall)
The point guard on the 2A championship team, Barrens is a quick pass-first player who fits the point guard archetype perfectly. His quick first step allows him to get to the basket at will, and his court vision gives his teammates ample opportunities to score. While his stats were not uploaded anywhere that I could find, he’s one to have an impact outside of the statsheet, though he does pile up assists, and on the defensive end, his quick hands allow him to get a plentitude of steals. Barrens is great at leading the fast break, and gets Pecos’ offense out in transition quickly and often, making the Panthers one of the highest scoring teams in the state.
7. Satchel Hogue Satchel Hogue 5'11" | PG Kirtland Central | 2023 State NM – Kirtland Central High School (#29 overall)
One of New Mexico’s best kept secrets, Hogue was nothing short of fantastic for Kirtland Central, leading the Broncos in every major statistical category, and having possibly one of the most statistically complete seasons in New Mexico. He averaged 23.0 PPG, which was 6th in the state for points per game, 6.1 RPG, 3.2 APG, 2.3 SPG, and 1.4 BPG, all team-highs. His killer season earned him a spot on the 4A All-Regular Season 3rd Team and on the 3A/4A All-Star Team, as he attacks the basketball with a high efficiency, tied for the highest field goal percentage on the team.
6. Alex Alfaro Alex Alfaro 6'1" | PG Deming | 2023 State NM – Deming High School (#22 overall)
Alfaro was easily one of the most dominant players in New Mexico, leading Deming to the quarterfinals of the 4A playoffs. He averaged 20.8 PPG (10th in State), 12.1 RPG (3rd in State, 1st among Guards), 2.0 APG, 2.9 SPG, and 1.0 BPG. His versatility on offense allows him to score at all three levels, as he has a lethal mid-range jumper, but also utilizes his frame and size to get to the basket. On defense, Alfaro’s lateral mobility and burst allows him to get steals regularly and push in transition. Possibly the best offensive rebounding guard in the state, he puts up double-doubles regularly, including a 14 point 14 rebound 4 steal performance against Del Norte High School in the first round of the 4A playoffs.
