Day 1 of the event provided all the exciting and impressive performances that we love to see. There is a level of competition we can’t afford to miss. The Virginia Jumpoff is taking place in Hampton, Virginia from 28 April until 30 April. They’re attended by some of the top clubs in the country and they give everything to college coaches.
Chaevon Torrence
Chaevon Torrence
Torrance really locked in on the defensive end on Friday. The 6-foot-5 big man was able to play the passing lanes for deflections and interceptions as he displayed fluent steps in space, something that a lot of young big-men struggle with. Torrance showed the ability to grab the rebound and go, taking it coast to coast for finishes at the other end of the court. Torrance was able to do this off a rebound or a steal.
Dareian Parker
Dareian Parker
Parker did a good job of moving off ball and getting to the paint for shots at the rim. Parker forced his way into the paint throughout day one of Marquee Hoops Virginia Jumpoff, his strength on his drives helped him maintain straight lanes to the rim and absorb contact on those drives. Parker did a good job diving to the rim and cutting back door when the ball wasn’t in his hands. Parker’s body control on his finishes drew fouls at the rim, including a tough and-1.
Demtruis Purnell
Demtruis Purnell
Purnell shot the three-pointer with confidence on day one of Marquee Hoops Virginia Jumpoff. He was able to knock down tough threes off the catch or off the dribble regardless of what effort the defense gave to contest the shot. On the defensive end, Purnell’s ability to make a perfect closeout to shooters, deterring any opportunity for a shot or an attack, stood out to me. Purnell moved his feet very well and used his length to make life difficult for opposing ball handlers.
Tyler Suber
Tyler Suber
Suber possesses a lightning quick change of direction with the ball. He was able to beat defenders off the dribble to get to the basket and finish in traffic consistently throughout day one of Marquee Hoops Virginia Jumpoff as well as muscle his way through the paint to draw fouls on the shot. Suber played unselfish as we saw him make the right reads once entering the paint, rather that be shot or a kick out or dump off pass.
Parker showed his ability to rid of the ball quickly against double teams, but he really thrived on the defensive end of the ball in his matchups from day one of Marquee Hoops Virginia Jumpoff. The 6-foo-6 forward did a good job of blitzing the on-ball screen and recovering back to his man promptly. When guarding on ball, he was able to time up his contest perfectly for good contest and blocked shots, even forcing players to pass out of their shot at times.
