Coach Beaudrie Comments on the Comet Shootout

"This weekend was difficult as it was the first time that I had all 9 guys that played together against a defense. We have 5 new players from last year's returning squad, so it took a little while to get some chemistry going between everyone as they are still trying to figure out each other's strengths, roles, etc..."

"All in all, we progressed a little bit more each and every game in different aspects of the game."

"I thought the 2nd half of our 2nd game and the entire 3rd game - we really started to become a little more cohesive as a group. It really helped the team chemistry to get a win in our 3rd game, and in the style that we did it. We came back from 4 down with 45 seconds left to win by 2. [player_tooltip player_id='1510892' first='Brayden' last='Blikre'] got 2 steals and lay-ups in to tie it, and then [player_tooltip player_id='1511062' first='Rocklin' last='Beaudrie'] stole the ball on the press in the next possession by diving after a loose ball. We called time-out - set up a last-second play which the boys ran to perfection for the game-winning lay-up by [player_tooltip player_id='1510889' first='Boston' last='Cranston'] on a great assist by [player_tooltip player_id='1510891' first='Kolby' last='FastHorse'] with 1.6 seconds left."

"I thought each player showed us something in their own right. The returning 4 from last year of [player_tooltip player_id='1510891' first='Kolby' last='FastHorse'], [player_tooltip player_id='1510889' first='Boston' last='Cranston'], [player_tooltip player_id='1510892' first='Brayden' last='Blikre'], and [player_tooltip player_id='1511062' first='Rocklin' last='Beaudrie'] already know what their roles are, and know our system pretty well - so they had the advantage coming in. The new guys this year are [player_tooltip player_id='1921183' first='Ethan' last='Luna'], [player_tooltip player_id='1921182' first='Gavin' last='Parnow'], [player_tooltip player_id='1632699' first='Collin' last='Swenson'], Payten Linbo, and [player_tooltip player_id='1845252' first='Gunnar' last='Jost']. Again - each of these guys brings something different to the squad in a very positive way. Ethan is going to fit in well with our uptempo style as he is very quick and can handle the ball. Gavin is a quiet player that can score and defends well. Collin is an absolute workhorse and a great teammate to play with and Payten and Gunnar add some needed outside scoring threats to our team. Once they all get comfortable with each other and get used to each other - I think we will have a very tough crew. We need to shore up some things on the defensive end as we need to be a bit more aggressive due to lack of height - but we should be a tough out for anyone we play going forward."

He has improved his defensive ability this season and does a great job of keeping guys in front of him. He has unlimited potential. Boston has an uncanny ability to be able to score when we need it most.”

“Payten can be a knock-down shooter when he gets locked in. Payten is a newcomer this year and is still finding his role but he has already proven that he is a very legitimate outside threat.

“Brayden is probably the most versatile player we have. He plays Center for us, will play an off-guard, and forward position at times, and occasionally will run the point. He is one of our best athletes all-around and can do a little bit of everything. He has great springs and rebounds well for his size. Brayden has a quiet leadership to him. Brayden has nice touch around the rim, and cuts to the basket well to provide scoring opportunities for himself.”

#41 [player_tooltip player_id='1632699' first='Collin' last='Swenson'] (2026) |5'10 G| Our Redeemers

“Workhorse!!! Love watching this kid. He is 100% full speed every second he is on the floor. He is a great communicator on offense and defense – extremely intelligent and it's very rare that he will make a mental mistake. Collin has a nice outside shot, is a good ball-handler, and passer. Very high basketball IQ. He is a very good help-side defender and reads the floor exceptionally well on both ends.”

#52 [player_tooltip player_id='1845252' first='Gunnar' last='Jost'] (2026) |5'10 G| Des Lacs-Burlington

“Gunnar is another kid that has the potential to go ballistic from the outside at any given moment. He has a quick release on his shot and has very good shooting touch and form. Gunnar can handle the ball pretty well for us as well. He will have some big games for us this season!”

#55 [player_tooltip player_id='1921183' first='Ethan' last='Luna'] (2026) |5'9 G| Dickinson

“Ethan is another Dickinson High athlete on our roster which bodes well for the Midgets in the coming years. Ethan is probably the quickest athlete we have. He has made a very positive impact on us with his finishes on fast breaks and his defensive aggressiveness. Ethan is the type of athlete that is going to get better each and every game because of his work ethic. Very excited to have him on our squad this year.”

PHD: What has you excited about this team/roster?

Coach Beaudrie: “This year's 15U West team has a mixture of a lot of things a coach loves to have when trying to build a solid team. We have some shooters, some drivers, some defensive stoppers, ball-handlers, and intelligent players. The only thing we are lacking a lot of is overall size. These guys do play taller than their listed heights – but we are going to be smaller than pretty much every team we face. The positive side of it is that they work their tails off every second they are on the floor. I am very excited to be coaching a bunch of guys that want to be coached, and are eager to work hard every second they get an opportunity!”

PHD: How often will your team practice/work out?

Coach Beaudrie: “That is one of the downfalls of being so spread out geographically. We try to get together as often as we can, but it isn't near as much as we would like. We do make the most out of every chance we get to be together. A lot of what we do is just trying to work on the game of basketball itself. We try to work on individual and team skills that are going to make them better and more intelligent players when they go back to their school teams.”

PHD: What will a couple of your strengths be as a team?

Coach Beaudrie: “I think we should be able to put points on the board, as we do have a lot of guys that can find the hoop. I believe our strength in that respect is getting to the rim, and in turn – finding the kick-out if you get stopped. I also believe our communication will become a strength for us. The more they play together the better the communication they will have. You can never have a team that talks too much!”

PHD: What style of basketball will you play on the offensive end?

Coach Beaudrie: “We are wide open. We want to be patient – but quick and deliberate in what we are doing. We want to be able to read what our teammates are doing and then work to get ourselves or someone else open in the best spot possible. They are a very unselfish group when it comes to sharing the basketball – and I think that will help us on the offensive end."

PHD: What brand of defense do you foresee your team playing?

Coach Beaudrie: “We really stress man-to-man principles and seeing help and recover. We do have a zone press that we fall back into man-to-man. With one or two exceptions – we are all relatively the same size – so defensively we just match up closest man principle quite often. As long as they are communicating – we can be efficient with it.”
