Shockers 2026 opened with a 2-3 zone defense, while The Golden Franchize began defending out of 1-3-1. Neither looked well-schooled. Golden Franchize particularly looked a little unclear about the rotations of the 1-3-1 and how to stay solidified while the ball moves them.
The team changed into the more familiar man-to-man and found better success. It enabled them to inject more fire, more effort into their defense. Read about the varying levels of success each player found as they locked in.

(Siegel-Golden Franchize)
Defended Porter Ragle (SF/PF).
Dorian kept his body low and defended the perimeter quite well. His upper body strength helped him give a bump when needed, but his off-ball defense needs to improve.

Hudson made some rather uncontested post feeds over Kaleb Lewis. Lewis did not really work to deny those. Hudson’s passive driving nature did nothing to invite Kaleb to extend out into his personal space. Lewis should have recognized the infrequency of McKnight’s driving and slashing and adjusted accordingly. Denying passing lanes by playing up tight is the best way to check Judson at this stage of his development. Lewis did not do this.

#32 Rodney Dunlap III (Hume-Fogg-Golden Franchize)
#24 Cason Osinloye (?? / Golden Franchize)
Defended Hill Strong, a ’27 guard from Brentwood, Tennessee. Osinloye played very well off the ball, staying close enough to his man while playing active defense near the dribbler. He was actually effectively defending 1.5 men.

(Golden Franchize) played with aggression. He surged his way to the rim through a decent 2-3 zone and earned his way to the free throw line multiple times. Lyles was quick for a hulking player, even quicker than a couple of much more slight young guards.
Hill Strong (Shockers) played as a catch-and-shoot option. He needs to work harder away from the basketball. He did not move actively or float away as the defender checked him.
