Continue ReadingThe CBG Grassroots Tip-Off took place on Saturday at RockIt Sports in Henrico, VA, and it was one of the top events on the east coast with some of the best teams from the DMV, VA and NC in attendance. There were over 30 teams ranging from 17U-15U, with some of the top teams in the area taking place.
We will be spending the next week breaking down the many standouts we saw at the event. If you want to watch the replay, you can see it on the CBG Live Network.
Here’s a look at part 4 of the many 17U standouts from VA in the event.
Maurice Davis Maurice Davis 6'5" | SF James River | 2024 State VA | 6’5” F | Team Richmond
This is a new look for Team Richmond who have a lot of versatile pieces on their group, and Davis is pretty much the face for that as he helped them go 2-0 on Saturday. The 6’5” forward out of James River showed a lot of different facets to his game as he played and guarded multiple position, he showed the ability to drive in straight lines and made good decisions when he touched the paint and he scored the ball well in the midrange and around the rim. He has good instincts and impacts the game on both ends and he made winning plays regularly.
Javon Brooks Javon Brooks 6'2" | CG Carmel | 2024 VA | 6’2” CG | Team Richmond
When it comes to the guards on this TR team, Brooks is probably the one who has the most “game” to him as he can do a little bit of everything when he’s on the floor. He’s a strong and shifty ball handler who can create in isolation and get to spots off the bounce, he can move off the ball where he’s a good shooter from deep and he’s a capable and willing playmaker as well. He has this toughness about him and brings it defensively, and at times you want him to be a little more selfish as he is probably their best shot creator with the ball in his hands.
Harry Clarke Harry Clarke 6'5" | SF Midlothian | 2024 State VA | 6’5” WF | Team Richmond
Clarke is another guy for this TR group that turned some heads for small college coaches in attendance with his size and shot making ability that translates well to the next level. At 6’5” the Midlothian wing has good size to get his shot off, he has a quick release and good range from beyond the arc and he can attack off the bounce where he has a solid array of moves to create space to get his shot off. He fits the mold of a college player and should have a big summer on the HGSL Circuit.
Jason Penn Jason Penn 6'2" | PG Marshall | 2024 State VA | 6’1” PG | Nova Cavs
Penn was the most experienced returner for the Cavs on Saturday, and he didn’t disappoint as he ran the show and was aggressive looking to make plays with the ball in his hands. The 6’1” guard from George Marshall is a true floor general who controls the tempo and sees the floor very well, he has a lightning quick first step and can get in the paint to make plays for himself or others and he’s a very good on ball defender too. He makes winning plays on both ends of the floor and will always have his team in a position to win games.
Steven Cruz Steven Cruz 5'10" | PG James Madison | 2024 State VA | 5’8” PG | Nova Cavs
The other part of their talented backcourt, Cruz may not be the biggest or look like he’ll kill you on the court but he’s highly skilled and knows how to play the game. He plays with great pace with the ball in his hands and makes good decisions, he can knock down shots from deep and in the midrange and he competes on the defensive end getting under ball handlers and making them uncomfortable. He plays the game the right way and is very efficient in his ability to score it and make plays for others.
Jalen Wynn | 6’5” WF | BWSL Gold
BWSL Gold came to Richmond and went 2-0 with wins over CBG Elite and Circle Sports, and Wynn was very impressive as he made a number of highlight reel plays and got after it on both ends of the floor. Standing 6’5” with long arms and good leaping ability, he was fantastic in transition as a finisher above the rim, he guarded multiple positions and challenged shots at the rim and he played with a great motor on both ends of the floor. He was efficient as can be and brought great energy with his high motor and toughness throughout the day.
Jordan Watlington Jordan Watlington 6'5" | SF Menchville | 2024 State VA | 6’3” G | BWSL Gold
The Menchville guard is one of the Peninsula’s most underrated players and he will have his chance to shine this year with the departure of their starting backcourt from the last few years. At 6’3” Watlington has a mix of ball skills and the ability to get in the paint and make plays for others, he’s athletic and plays with a good motor on both ends of the floor and he puts pressure on the defense while also being a lock down defender of his own. He does all the dirty work while also being able to create shots for himself and others in the half court.
