Today we examined the Pennsylvania Class of 2025 rankings to find and review five shooting guards from southeastern Pennsylvania (besides Shinholster) who impressed us during the 2022-23 high school season.
#16… Dywane Chess Dywane Chess 5'11" | SG Liberty-transferred | 2025 PA – 6’1” / Liberty / Team Final Red HGSL / Shooting Guard: Chess (14 ppg.) is a quick and extremely athletic 2-guard who can score from anywhere on the floor. He can play above the rim in transition or drain spot up threes. During Liberty’s five post season contests, Chess raised his game a level, averaging 18.8 points per night. So, Chess proved he can handle playing on the big stages. On defense Chess is also a versatile piece who can guard 1 through 4, provide rim protection and rebound.
#37… Jacob Nguyen Jacob Nguyen 6'3" | SG Spring Ford | 2025 State PA – 6’3” / Spring Ford / Philly Pride UAA / Shooting Guard: Unless you have been living under a rock, you know the type of 2022-23 season this smooth shooter posted. This winter Nguyen drained threes of every variety (76 3PM) and popped a few mid-range jumpers too. He averaged 16 ppg. as he pushed Spring Ford to the PAC title, a District 1-6A runner up finish and the 6A state tournament semifinals. He poured in a season high 26 points in two different games. After the season Nguyen was a 1st Team All-PAC selection. He is a high IQ player who is just scratching the surface of his potential.
#69… Jaden Banner Jaden Banner 6'6" | PF West Catholic | 2025 State PA – 6’6” / West Catholic / Philly Pride UAA / Shooting Guard: Banner possesses the length and size of a small forward, but he plays like a shooting guard. Banner fearlessly attacks the rim off the dribble and can make the occasional 3-ball. At the other end of the court, Banner’s quick feet and mammoth wingspan enable him to defend on the perimeter. He can also serve as a shot blocker on the back end. In 2022-23 Banner was a role player for the 3A state champions, but the upside on this sophomore is intriguing. We expect a huge spring circuit from him.
#101…Gabe Tanner – 6’4″ / Perkiomen School / NEPA Elite / Shooting Guard: Like all highly rated shooting guards, Tanner can drill jumpers from all over the floor. But what really grabs your attention about this kid is his dynamic playmaking skills. The combination of Tanner’s athleticism, quickness, handles, and basketball IQ enables him to create off the dribble for himself and for teammates. He frequently appears to be two steps ahead of his opponents. Plus, Tanner excels at turning defense into easy buckets. When he is out in transition, Tanner can finish with authority or drop a dime to a streaking teammate. Tanner scored 19 points in the championship game of the PAISAA state tourney, leading Perkiomen to the state title. He holds an offer from St. Francis (PA).
#191…Evan Pagano – 6’2″ / Phelps School / Team Durant / Shooting Guard: Pagano’s has an extensive list of assets that make him extremely difficult shooting guard to defend. He possesses decent size, a quick trigger, deadly accuracy, unlimited range, and a non-stop motor. Additionally, Pagano owns respectable ball handling skills, so he can use the dribble drive to create space for himself or scoring chances for his teammates. Pagano registered a season high 18 points vs. Mastery Camden as well as New Foundations.
