Continue ReadingThe lefty guard provided big bench minutes for the #1 Cougars. He makes great reads and is very crafty, much like you would expect from a coaches’ kid. His midrange jumper was on display as he buried a tough turnaround to get himself on the board scoring. He went on to add a big spot up 3 in the 3rd quarter that tied the game up. Although a bit undersized, McKowen is keen to be in the right spot defensively, has good rotations, and moves his feet well on the perimeter to cut off dribble drive lanes for the opposition. The Cougars fell to #8 Pleasant Valley, however, I am not sure we have seen the last of Trey McKowen Trey McKowen 5’11” | PG Kennedy | 2025 State IA at Wells Fargo Arena.
Sophomore guard Jamison Poe Jamison Poe 5’8″ | PG Ames | 2025 State IA took some big strides throughout the season. He showed he was a vocal leader in the backcourt for the Little Cyclones who ran into the gauntlet that is Waukee in the quarterfinals. When it looked like Ames may get run out of the gym, Poe kept his orange & black crew dialed in and playing hard. Poe excelled defensively against much bigger Waukee guards and was able to cause 3 steals. He was tenacious and poking holes in the Waukee 2-3 zone all game long as he stayed low on his dribble drives to score or find open teammates. He ended his sophomore seaason with 6 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals. rn
The tall, lanky forward buried an early corner 3 that brought the Tiger faithful to life and they never looked back. When in the open court, Deng has his eyes set on attacking the rim and is built to stride out and elevate to finish through the contact. Standing at 6’6, Deng has a pure shooting stroke and makes it hard for defenders to alter his simple shooting motion. He added another corner 3 early in the 4th quarter, just as Norwalk was trying to make a charge at a comeback. Tigers will be back in action Thursday night for a semifinal tilt with the #8 seed Pleasant Valley Spartans.
Highlights
For the second time this week Barrantes makes an appearance in this article package. Hard to keep him off the list when he was a staple to the Thunder’s success once again Wednesday night. He ended his night with 13 points and 9 rebounds even through sitting awhile with what appeared to be a minor injury. The stretch 4 continues to cause matchup problems on the perimeter and sets himself up for easy buckets when working for position and quick offensive board put-backs.
Another ho-hum night from the workhorse Homan, as he ends his season posting a solid stat line in the 1A semifinals against North Linn. The big man for the Hawks had 12 points, and a game high 11 rebounds. He started the scoring off with an offensive rebound and putback and had the Hawks soaring early on. His ability to run the floor helped them beat the Lynx pesky press down the floor and they were able to capitalize with baskets early on. rn
