Rankings season has taken off and we're focusing on finding the players who performed this year that should see their stock rise rapidly during the AAU season. Today, we look at some guards out of the Steel City.

Michael Plasko | G | South Fayette

A strong guard with a solid frame who handles the ball well, Plasko was the 2nd leading scorer for SF this past season. He's got good court vision in the half court and can thread the needle on passes. 6'2" guard who can run the floor and finish at the rim. South Fayette was a gritty bunch this winter. He showed his next level ability against Cathedral Prep, having a solid all around game against a state title contender. Next year, he'll be expected to be the primary scoring option. He projects as a nice D-3 player.

[player_tooltip player_id='1187923' first='Major' last='Rainey'] | G | Allderdice

The 6'4" wing is the top returning player in the City League for next year and an explosive athlete. He's got a nice handle, gets to the rim off the bounce and can finish above the tin with authority. He's improving his mid range game but his top asset offensively is as a lethal slasher and backdoor cut type guy who can get to the rim. Defensively, he's active and a good on ball defender. Should be a favorite for City League Player Of The Year next winter. We should be able to argue that he go up 50+ spots by summer rankings time.

[player_tooltip player_id='1617871' first='Torrien' last='Perkins'] | G | Obama

The 6'3″ wing was one of the key reasons Obama had a good run through the City League this year.. A player who takes a quarter to get into the flow of the game but once he's firing on all pistons he's got a well rounded game. A nice form on his jumper, he can elevate on his shot and also get to the rim off the dribble. He is part of a group of returnees that could push the Eagles on next year. He should rise rapidly through summer and into his senior year.

[player_tooltip player_id='1518798' first='Logan' last='Golle'] | G | Allderdice

The third City League guard featured, Golle is a hot handed shooter that can score in bunches from the perimeter. He's also go a quick step to penetrate and get to the rim and finish. Reporters and scouts love to talk about floor generals. Golle is just that. A smart, heady lead guard with a high basketball IQ. He and Rainey will complement each other well and those two, along with Perkins, will be the trio competing for POTY honors. Expect all three to be All City.

Payton Wehner | G | Pittsburgh Central Catholic

While he is being honored for his excellence on the football field, QB1 may actually be a better lead guard. Wehner showed his junior year to have expanded his ballhandling skills. He's got a good basketball IQ and understanding of how to move the ball within an offense. He's got range beyond the 3 point line but he's in his element when he can drive, finish at the rim and dish. A year ago, Wehner was a QB playing basketball at a varsity level. Now, Wehner's a basketball player, playing basketball at the level where he could listen to colleges that inquire about his interest in putting away the pads, not getting chased by 275lb defensive linemen in college and instead running the point while taking far less physical contact.

While the Vikes lose a lot, Wehner and 6'5" forward Cole Sullivan are two excellent pieces to build around....Sullivan, a national football recruit with offers from every program that matters, showed this year he's also a scholarship level basketball player. Not a bad start for Coach Urso to rebuild with as the 2023s graduate.
