The tournament included several close games filled with lead changes, controversial calls and buzzer beaters. Impressive showings from both seniors and underclassmen alike, here are a few of the top performers:
Andreo Ash Andreo Ash 6’8″ | SG Liverpool | 2024 State #161 Nation NY is a 6’7 forward from Liverpool High School and is in the graduating class of 2024. His offensive ability was on full display and Ash was scoring the ball at all 3 levels. Has the ability to post up and put smaller defenders on his back while using footwork for high percentage turnaround shots, can knock down 3’s off the catch when teammates drive and draw his defender into the help, and has shown the ability to drive past closeouts and knock down the one dribble pull up from 15 feet. We saw Ash and his team play in the NYSPHAA Championship in a close semi final game that went down to the wire against North Rockland HS. Ash made some big plays down the stretch in overtime which included several offensive rebounds which lead to put back conversions for timely points.
Elijah Barclay
Elijah Barclay
Elijah Barclay is a 6’3 combo guard from North Rockland High School and is in the graduating class of 2024. Barclay is a strong combo guard and was one of the top prospects we saw all weekend. Polished, skilled, and has an attack mentality. Explosive off the dribble, can get all the way to the rim or pull up to knock down shots from 15 feet. Attacks the basket aggressively and consistently puts pressure on the defense, makes good reads when help side defenders commit. Knocked down some 3’s off the catch and seems to understand how to get himself open for high percentage shots.
Bruce Wingate is a 6’3 guard from Liverpool High School and is in the graduating class of 2024. Wingate displays a high basketball IQ and plays with poise. Controls the tempo of the game for his team on the offesnive end, picks his spots nicely and lets the game come to him. Strong driver, has the ability to create straight line drives to the basket and finish through contact. Capable 3 point shooter, can set his feet and get the shot off quickly while knocking down contested shots. In addition to seeing Wingate play in the NYSPHAA tournament, we were able to catch the Liverpool vs Proctor game for a tough sectional battle, and Wingate was spectacular in this contest. He started the game off with a 3 off the pull up and stayed consistent until the final horn. We were most impressed at his ability to manage emotions and stay level headed in an extremely physical game.
Kobe Nwosu
Kobe Nwosu
Kobe Nwosu is a 6’4 forward from North Rockland High School and is in the graduating class of 2023. Nwosu is long, lanky and athletic. Strong rebounder, especially on the offensive end of the floor. In the NYSPHAA semi-final game against Liverpool, Nwosu came up with several offensive rebounds that extended crucial possessions for his team, ultimately leading to a chance at overtime, where they were able to take and maintain the lead for the win. Great touch around the rim, can finish in traffic and has great footwork in the paint, allowing him to use both sides of the basket for finishes. Defensively he is a force in the paint, good timing when blocking shots, rebounds well and holds teams to one shot.
Frederick Fowler Jr
Frederick Fowler Jr
Frederick Fowler Jr is a 5’11 combo guard from Liverpool High School and is in the graduating class of 2025. Fowler didn’t play in the first game that we got to see Liverpool play this season, but he was hard to miss, and we noticed him right away during the NYSPHAA tournament in their matchup against North Rockland HS. Fowler is strong guard that has a good feel for the game, has the ability to drive and consistently puts pressure on the defense. Capable shooter from distance and seems to have a knack for making big plays. Fowler Jr came up huge on several occasions down the stretch for Liverpool.
Connor Wein
Connor Wein
Connor Wein is a 6’0 combo guard from North Rockland High School and is in the graduating class of 2023. Wein is a crafty guard that is extremely competitive, he made some big shots during big moments of the semi-final game vs Liverpool, including a contested 3 that tied the game and also a fadeaway jumper in the fourth quarter that put them up by one. Impressive display of his will to win, leading his team by example. Solid ball handler, good driver and has the ability to attack closeouts and find open lanes to attack. Gets after it on defense as well, sits in a stance and can pressure ball handlers in the back court.
Jah’Deuir Reese
Jah’Deuir Reese
Jah’Deuir Reese is a 6’0 combo guard from Liverpool High School and is in the graduating class of 2023. Reese is a crafty ball handler and has the ability to get into the paint to create for himself and his teammates, consistently puts pressure on his defenders in both the half court and in transition settings. Makes good reads when help side defenders commit to him, finds teammates with passes that are on time and on target. Can knock down 3’s both off the catch and off the dribble.
Yariel Gomez-Parra
Yariel Gomez-Parra
Yariel Gomez-Parra is a 5’10 point guard from North Rockland High School and is in the graduating class of 2023. Gomez-Parra is physically strong and uses that strength effectively on the defensive end, consistently putting pressure on ball handlers and has the ability to turn him several times in the back court. Good positioning when closing out on his man, wins the point of attack and can keep players out of the paint. Gomez-Parra seems to be comfortable in big moments, he knocked down a fadeaway jump shot on the baseline in regulation, which gave his team a chance at overtime where they ultimately overtook their opponent.
