With Isaiah Rider on the AZ Unity bench and Matt Barnes coaching the LA Soldiers we had a start studded game here as both coaches had kids playing on their respective squads. The LA Soldiers had about 8 players in their rotation and AZ Unity usually rolls with six players that get significant minutes.
Off the Tip
Right off the bat it was apparent that there was a height advantage that AZ Unity had and you would expect a possible zone and AZ Unity looked locked in. On the first few defensive stands that the LA Soldiers showed they looked ot be aggressive which somewhat backfired early as they got out of position which led to the help side coming over and a dunk by Mayom Mayom. The mis-positioning also put them out of rebounding position which caused some issues as well.
Key Players
6’7 Mayom Mayom || AZ Unity
6’0 Delton Prescott III || AZ Unity
6’10 Paul Osaruyi || AZ Unity
6’9 Darius Wabbington || AZ Unity
6’3 Gene Roebuck || LA Soldiers
5’10 Cisco Munoz || LA Soldiers
6’0 Carter Barnes || LA Soldiers
6’0 Isaiah Barnes || LA Soldiers
6’3 Cole Holden || LA Soldiers
The Pace
Very Impressed with the way AZ Unity controlled the pace. They put pressure on the LA Soldiers with their trapping defense that forced them into tough early and quick shots. Some went down but most rattled out. Mayom Mayom moves very well without the ball on cuts and Paul Osaruyi was calm with the ball and made some great reads.
PG Battle
Cisco Munoz was cooking early for the LA Soldiers as he displayed his quick first step and control with the ball as he would get low on his dribbles and pop up and finish. He can also shoot the ball and he showed that. On the other side of the ball it was once again Delton Prescott III taking over as defenders gambled and he made them pay with his vision or when he got aggressive and finished himself.
The Difference
At the end of the game it came down to making open shits. LA Soldiers got open looks and just missed. Gene Roebuck got some good looks but was just off the mark. The Barnes Brothers had some good looks just miss the mark as well. AZ Unity is a team that will grind you down with their size and the new found patience they played with really made the biggest difference in the end as they pulled away slowly to capture the Championship.
