They kicked off the Spring season with their signature event the Kingz and Queenz of the City tournament which features teams from throughout the west region. With the game going more the way of combo guards, it was nice to see a huge crop of pure PGs, in fact, there were so many, we had to separate them into categories. The event was home to several taller players with PG skills. In this article, we take a look at some of the best Big Guards at the event.
Douglas Sweat
Douglas Sweat
I saw Sweat a year ago and at the very least he looked like he’s spent time sweating in the weight room. Despite the muscle gain, the physically opposing guard did not lose his speed and quickness. He played with good power, dominating opponents when he was able to get shoulder to shoulder with them. He has a good feel for the game, as he was able to be effective with making the decesion between shooting and passing. A true big guard prospect to keep on the radar.
Maurice Carter
Maurice Carter
Carter was perhaps the best overall player I saw during the weekend. The PG was magnificent, showing the ability to dribble, shoot and pass. He had a strong handle, using it to get his frame to any spot he wanted on the court. He was deadly accurate with his shooting, knocking down a ton of shots outside the three point line. His passing was also on point as Carter was one of the best draw and dish players at the event. All in all it was a big stockrising event for the Big Guard PG.
Amir Kenndric
Amir Kenndric
I really respected the way Kenndric bounced back this weekend. In the first game I watched, he just couldn’t seem to finish anything around the rim. To his credit, he bounced back nicely, the next time I saw him not only was he finishing, but he was creating the shots he finished. The combo was good as both the starter, and finisher of the break, putting together a nice overall weekend for himself.
Peyton Washington
Peyton Washington
Washington is a physcial guard that was able to overpower defenders. He was at his best when playing downhill in transition, using his frame to initiate contact before finishing around the rim. Washington also used his size to grab rebounds, scoring off his share of putbacks.
Von Darby
Von Darby
One of the first players I saw. Darby has natural PG instincts, along with good speed and quickness. His shiftyness came in the form of his passing as he got the ball out his hand quickly, and showed the ability to deliever some nifty assist.
Damien Ortega
Damien Ortega
Damian Oretega can go! I didn’t see anyone stay in front of the the Rim Rocker PG all weekend. He used a combination of quickness and a wicked handle to blow by defenders in both the back and frontcourt. He used a bunch of COD’s including spin moves, behind the back dribbles and crossovers.
