There were about eight guys that needed to be on the team, and they all play similar positions. This made for a great tournament, but a tough all-star team to select.
So we did our best to make a team that gets the most deserving guys on it in one way or another.
Here is the 2023 4A All-Tournament Team:
PG – (tie) Kyden Thompson Kyden Thompson 6'2" | SG McPherson | 2024 State KS , 6-foot-2 guard, 2024, McPherson, and Cory Muehler Cory Muehler 5'11" | CG McPherson | 2024 State KS 6-foot guard, 2024, McPherson:
It seems appropriate to let these two share this spot. They were both brilliant keeping the McPherson offense revved up and opposing guards locked up. They both are ballhawks who pick off a lot of passes and tip away a lot of dribbles. They both are great with the ball in the open court. Muehler showed a little more from the perimeter and midrange, while Thompson made more plays in transition. Thompson scored 48 points in the tournament, while Muehler contributed 47.
SG – Ryle Riddlesperger Ryle Riddlesperger 6'2" | PG Hugoton | 2023 State KS , 6-foot-2 guard, 2023, Hugoton (pictured):
Riddlesperger was the number one offensive weapon for the Eagles. When he wasn’t breaking down defenses with the drive to jump shots, he was zig zagging through the half court set to get to open shots from the perimeter. He wound up hitting 13 3-pointers and accumulating 55 points in the run to the championship. Miege guard Mac Armstrong deserves mention here or at the point guard spot. He was a key ball handler and spearhead of the Stags offense. He scored 51 points to lead Miege to third place.
SF – Carson Bennett Carson Bennett 6'2" | SF Hugoton | 2023 State KS , 6-foot-2 guard, 2023, Hugoton:
Bennett and Riddlesperger were a dynamic tandem for the past few years, and it culminated in a championship run. Bennett is an excellent ball handler and playmaker, but he adjusted his role to complement Riddlesperger and point guard Dasean Lewis Dasean Lewis 5'10" | PG Hugoton | 2024 State KS . Bennett was efficient in the tournament. The senior hit 20-34 field goal attempts and finished with 50 points.
PF – Aidan Wing Aidan Wing 6'4" | SF Bishop Miege | 2023 State KS , 6-foot-5 forward, 2023, Miege:
Wing was dynamic in the tournament, leading all scorers, making highlight plays on offense and intimidating drivers on the defensive end. He hit 20-40 attempts from the field, including six 3-pointers, and finished with 60 points in the tournament. Very deserving of a look at the forward spot was Eudora senior Conor Dunback. Though just 5-foot-10, Dunback showed a mastery of getting to open spots near the basket to receive passes. He showed creativity and surprising athleticism to finish at the rim. Dunback converted a remarkable 17-27 shots for 34 points. He also led Eudora in rebounding each of their three games.
C – Daegan Jensen Daegan Jensen 6'1" | SG Bishop Miege | 2023 State KS , 6-foot-5 center, 2023, Miege:
McPherson’s Mason Miller was probably the closest thing to a true center among the four semi-final teams, but Jensen was a little more productive and therefore gets this spot. The big Miege senior was effective in the midrange and around the glass. He was rarely the go-to focal point of the offense, but he efficiently capitalized on his opportunities. He hit 18-32 shots from the field. In the consolation game he overwhelmed Eudora, drawing fouls to hit 7-12 free throws. The senior scored 47 points.
Sixth Man – Griffin Heger, 5-foot-10 guard, 2024, Hugoton:
There weren’t any bench players at 4A who really made big statistical contributions. We’ll go with Heger at this spot for his spark off the bench. He brings a ton of energy and pushes the pace up a notch when he’s in the game. Heger can spell starters at about three different positions and is an offensive threat opponents can’t ignore. He scored 14 points in the tournament.
