To get the best players on the list, we went with three ties and put Brandl at the power forward position. He can play any position, so why not?
Here is the 2023 1A Div. II All-Tournament Team:
PG – Titus Sherer Titus Sherer 5'6" | PG Greeley County | 2023 KS , 5-foot-4 guard, 2023, Greeley County:
Sherer is a scraper and a winner. His stats may not jump out at you, but after winning back-to-back titles, he deserves this spot. He gets after it at the defensive end and brings a spark to his teammates.
SG – (tie) Isaac Detweiler, 5-foot-11 guard, 2023, Axtell, and Jamie Sarmiento, 5-foot-7 guard, 2025, South Central:
Detweiler has been one of the top teams in the 1A level for a couple of years now. He led Axtell to the #2 seed. He scored 33 points, got the ball to teammates and also led the team in rebounds in two games. He struggled a bit in the consolation game against Sarmiento and South Central. Sarmiento really impressed throughout the tournament and got 18 points in the consolation game. He scored 41 points in the three-game run to third place.
SF – (tie) Landon Grimmett Landon Grimmett 6'1" | CG Lebo | 2023 State KS , 6-foot guard, 2023, Lebo, and Grayson Shoemaker Grayson Shoemaker 6'1" | SF Lebo | 2024 State KS , 6-foot-1 forward, 2024, Lebo:
Lebo entered the tournament seeded sixth, but they advanced to the championship game and actually led Greeley County through three quarters of the final. For that, we’ll split this position between these teammates. Grimmett, one of the top 1A players for several years, went out with a bang. He scored 59 points, including 32 in the semifinal against Axtell. Shoemaker had a huge opening game with 30 points and 4 assists against St. John’s/Tipton. He led Lebo in assists in each of the three games and scored 49 points.
PF – Jaxson Brandl Jaxson Brandl 6'2" | CG Greeley County | 2023 State KS , 6-foot-1 forward, 2023, Greeley County (pictured):
A year ago, Brandl scored 76 points to lead Greeley County to the championship. No way he could repeat that, right? Well check out his stats from this year’s three-game title run: 70 points, 27-40 field goals, 9-11 from the line, 7-11 from behind the arc, 22 rebounds. He also led the Jackrabbits in assists in two of the three games. Not much more to say. He’s simply the best 1A player in recent memory.
C – (tie) Grady Buessing, 6-foot-2 forward, 2024, Axtell, and Heath Howell, 6-foot-5 center, 2024, South Central:
We’ll split this spot between these two juniors. They both had some very strong moments in Great Bend. Buessing scored 25 points and led Axtell in rebounding twice. Howell, a big man to watch for next season, provided 20 points to South Central’s third-place finish.
