We recently updated our sophomore class rankings in the state of VA, and we will take a look at each positional ranking from guards, wings and forwards. Obviously some of these players are positionless players that can fit in multiple spots, but we did our best to categorize them based on their skillset.

Here's a look at part one of the top point and combo guards in the new rankings.

24) Ethan Salvatteria | 5'8” PG | Forest Park (#53 Overall)

Salvatteria may not be the biggest player on the floor, but he's been a big part over the past few years of a young Forest Park team that has a bright future. He has fantastic feel and instincts as a lead guard who gets his team into sets and makes plays for others, he has good footwork and touch as a finisher over bigger defenders and defensively he is a good on ball defender and he jumps passing lanes too.

23) [player_tooltip player_id='1494123' first='Howard' last='Casterlow'] | 5'9” PG | Nansemond-Suffolk (#51 Overall)

Casterlow is one of the 757 best kept gems as he's been a big time contributor early for Nansemond-Suffolk both on the hardwood and the football field, and his natural athletic ability makes him able to play bigger than he is. He's a lightning quick guard with a good first step and speed in the open floor, he can knock down shots from deep and in the midrange and he's able to set the tone on both ends of the floor.

22) [player_tooltip player_id='1494124' first='Jarrett' last='Jardine'] | 6'0” PG | Meridian (#50 Overall)

Jardine is quickly becoming a top guard in the NOVA area with his natural ability to run the show and his two way impact as a young guard. He exudes toughness as he will sacrifice his body by taking a charge or stick his nose in to get his hands on the ball, he has terrific vision and feel with the ball in his hands and he's really good in pick-and-rolls with his ability to both score it and make plays for others.

21) [player_tooltip player_id='1249127' first='Cody' last='Gordon'] | 6'0” PG | St. Stephen's St. Agnes (#49 Overall)

Gordon is a young guard on an SSSAS squad that has shown flashes of talent while waiting his turn for more opportunities which are set to come moving forward. The 6'0” lead guard is a skilled ball handler who can push the tempo and make plays in transition, he's a good finisher around the rim in transition and in the half court and he can drill shots from deep off the catch and off the bounce.

20) [player_tooltip player_id='1494122' first='Sonny' last='Bridges'] | 5'10” PG | St. Chris (#47 Overall)

Bridges is another two sport star that also shines on the football field for the Saints, and on the basketball court he looks like he's going to be one of the top guards in Richmond in the next few years. The 5'10” guard is a fluid athlete who thrives in transition with the ball in his hands, he sits down defensively and guards the ball with good hands to force turnovers and he's a talented shot maker who is a consistent shooter from deep.

19) [player_tooltip player_id='1767543' first='Gavin' last='Herrington'] | 5'10” PG | Floyd County (#46 Overall)

Herrington is one of the top young guards you'll find the SWVA area, and he's continuing to get better and better as time goes on. He's grown a few inches from last year and is a good athlete who can play at the rim when he gets downhill against bigger defenders, he puts pressure on the defense with his ability to touch the paint and make plays for others and he's an all-out kind of guy who makes plays on both ends of the floor.

18) [player_tooltip player_id='1598943' first='Parker' last='Cage'] | 6'0” PG | Hayfield (#45 Overall)

Cage is a young guard who is waiting his turn on one of the best teams in the state, but when he gets in you can see the big time potential he has over the next few years. He's a dynamic guard who can create in isolation and pick-and-roll situations, he is a knock down shooter from deep both off the catch and off the bounce and he touches the paint regularly where he can both score it and make plays for others.

17) [player_tooltip player_id='1767542' first='Theo' last='Burke'] | 5'10” PG | WT Woodson (#44 Overall)

Burke has emerged as a very important piece for a Woodson team that is on the rise and had a good season, and a lot of that has to do with his ability to make plays with the ball in his hands. He's shown the ability to get to spots and score the ball in a number of different ways, he has good quickness that he uses on both ends of the floor to make plays and he brings a competitive chip and toughness to his team.

16) [player_tooltip player_id='1494120' first='Everett' last='Jones'] | 6'2” PG | Flin Hill (#38 Overall)

Jones is a future star for this Flint Hill team, and while he plays behind a lot of more experienced players he has shown flashes of talent and skill that is very intriguing moving forward. He has good size already and is likely still growing, he plays with good pace and has a good feel for the game as a playmaker and he picks his spots and scores the ball efficiently in different ways.

15) [player_tooltip player_id='1494116' first='Kassidy' last='Jackson'] | 5'9” PG | Green Run (#33 Overall)

Jackson is one of the top young guards in the 757 area, and has made a huge impact on a young Green Run team that has been successful against a very good schedule this year. He is a dynamic ball handler with a quick first step and is super shifty, he's ablate get in the paint where he's a good finisher at the rim and in the midrange and he's a very good defender who can stay in front of ball handlers the length of the floor.
