The event featured teams from multiple states and was absolutely loaded with talent. Here’s a look at part one of the standouts from the Virginia teams.
Javen Foster | 6’7” PF | Massanutten
Massanutten was short handed this weekend and only had six players available so they needed some players to step up, and Foster was one of the biggest ones that did helping them go 2-0 this weekend with wins over Scotland and TPLS. Foster is a superb athlete who showed that with numerous highlight finishes above the rim, he owned the paint as a rebounder and a rim protector and he was super efficient playing within his game and finishing everything at the rim. He finished with 17 points and 15 rebounds in their win over TPLS and 21 points and 12 rebounds on 10-for-11 shooting in their win over Scotland.
Mike Gray | 6’1” CG | Massanutten
Gray was another player who got to show a little bit more with them being short handed, and we knew he could score as he’s become their third option over the year and he showed just that. He’s a player who can play on or off the ball and has the ability to make tough contested shots from multiple levels, he gets to spots off the ball and has a quick release and deep range off the catch and off the bounce he shows good wiggle and can finish in the midrange and at the rim. He finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds in their win over Scotland and 28 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists in their win over TPLS.
Chase Nelson Chase Nelson 6'0" | PG Massanutten Military Academy | 2023 VA | 6’0” PG | Massanutten
Nelson has been on a tear the last few months for Massanutten as he has adjusted to the speed of the game and he’s been shooting the cover off the ball recently. He does a good job initiating the offense and handling pressure as the primary ball handler, he runs to spots in transition where he isn’t afraid to let it fly from deep and he’s a good on ball defender who pesters ball handlers and forces turnovers. He finished with 20 points and 7 assists in their win over TPLS.
Troy McKoy Troy McKoy 6'4" | SG Cushing Academy (MA) | 2024 #200 Nation NLG | 6’5” WF | Massanutten 2024
With Mississippi State commit Adrian Myers Adrian Myers 6'5" | SF Massanutten | 2023 State VA out this weekend, McKoy had to step up as he’s done all year for this Massanutten team and showed his elite overall play doing a little bit of everything to help his team win. The 6’5” wing is a confident and natural scorer from all over the floor whether he has the ball in his hands or not, he is a big time rebounder and has toughness to him when fighting for 50-50 balls and he has become a much better playmaker over the past few months. He finished with 29 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists in their win over Scotland and had 20 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists in their win over TPLS.
Malik Johnson Malik Johnson 6'4" | PG Hampton | 2024 State VA | 6’4”CG | Massanutten 2024
Johnson was maybe the one who benefited the most from Massanutten being short handed, as he got to show what he can do with the ball in his hands and made a lot of plays on both ends of the floor. The 6’4” guard has great size for his position and he has long arms to get deflections defensively, he has good wiggle off the bounce and touches the paint where he can make plays for himself and others and he’s a good rebounder for his position too. He finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds in their win over TPLS and 10 points and 6 assists in their win over Scotland.
