Indiana is full of great teams and talented players thus giving the fans incredible matchups every week. Join me, Kyler Staley, every Monday during the season as I preview the 3 Players, 3 Teams, and 3 Matchups to watch for that coming week. Are you ready? Let’s get started!
3 Players
Highlights
Dancler enters into this week as one of the best remaining 2023s in the state. He is a very, very good shooter that can create his own look off the dribble and off the ball. It seems like his injury he suffered last season kind of put a stand-still on his recruitment but it has not slow down his play this season. Has offers from Northern Illinois, Kent State, and Ball State. He is a guard that can come in an produce at any level. He and Southport play at Hamilton Southeastern on 2/11.
Highlights
Romack is one of the best forwards that is still available in the 2023 class. At 6’6, Romack is one of the more versatile power forwards we have in the state and is easily one of the more mobile. He is a double-double machine and his motor and strength make him so hard to contain against any team. He has improved his stock over the years. Currently has offers from Marian University and Hope College. He and Westfield have a tough week with games at Harrison (West Lafayette) (2/7), Hamilton Heights (2/10), and Lewis Cass (2/11).
The best 2023 center entering into this week is northern Indiana and his name is Josh Furst Josh Furst 6'6" | C Blackhawk Christian | 2023 State IN . Furst is having a great year for Blackhawk Christian and is a big reason why they are 15-3 this year. He is a great fundamentally around the basket and plays with so much power and force. Runs the floor very well and has some sneaky athletic ability. He would be great at the NAIA level. He and the Braves host Heritage Christian on 2/11.
3 Teams
Greenfield-Central (4A): The Cougars enter this week with 17-1 record and are currently a top 15 team in 4A. Led by Marion commit Dylan Moles Dylan Moles 6'3" | PG Greenfield-Central | 2023 State IN , Greenfield-Central has been fantastic this season and currently riding a 14-game winning streak. The roster around Moles is impressive too as you have a fellow senior guard Tyler Kerkhof Tyler Kerkhof 6'1" | PG Greenfield-Central | 2023 State IN and one of best overall guards in the 2025 class, Braylon Mullins Braylon Mullins 6'6" | SG Greenfield-Central | 2025 State #123 Nation IN . When you are thinking of darkhorses at the 4A level, Greenfield-Central fits that category. They play at Franklin County (2/10) and host Avon (2/11) this week.
Scottsburg (3A): The Scottsburg Warriors have proved a lot of doubters wrong this season. After losing a few players that transferred to another school, guys like Wyatt Zellers, Jack Miller Jack Miller 6'5" | SG Scottsburg | 2024 State IN , and Kody Clancy Kody Clancy 6'4" | PG Scottsburg | 2024 State IN have stepped up in a major way. They sit at 15-2, a top 7 team in 3A, and are riding a 5-game winning streak. They are making some noise in southern Indiana. They play at Silver Creek on Friday.
Morgan Township (1A): The Cherokees might be the most surprising team at the 1A level. They are 15-3 so far this season and are on a great track to finish with more wins than they did last year (16). They are led by a pair junior guards, Keagan Holder and Jaiden Spratley, and those two have put up great numbers this season. Morgan Township is the team to watch our for coming out of northern Indiana. They play at Kouts (2/9) and host Wheeler (2/10).
3 Matchups
Zionsville (4A) at Center Grove (4A) – Feb 7th, 7:30 pm: This game has a chance to be a really fun, back-and-forth matchup. Center Grove has been really, really good this year and guards Marcus Ankney Marcus Ankney 6'3" | SG Center Grove | 2023 State IN and Joey Schmitz Joey Schmitz 6'2" | PG Center Grove | 2024 State IN have been at the forefront of it. Zionsville, however, has not had the season they had hoped but are still a dangerous team with the 1-2 punch of Logan Imes Logan Imes 6'4" | PG Zionsville | 2023 State #202 Nation IN and Nick Richart Nick Richart 6'9" | PF Zionsville | 2023 State IN . The key to this game will be how Center Grove plans to contain Richart, which is a tall task. Zionsville needs a big win and I think they get the upset road victory here.
Brownstown Central (2A) at Bedford North Lawrence (4A) – Feb 10th, 7:30 pm: This game really intrigues me on paper. Everybody knows how good Brownstown is and Purdue commit Jack Benter Jack Benter 6'4" | SG Brownstown Central | 2024 State #121 Nation IN has had a special season up to this point already. However, not many know that Bedford has been a really tough team as well and sit at 12-5 right now. The Stars are led by senior guards Colton Staggs Colton Staggs 6'1" | PG Bedford North Lawrence | 2023 IN and Colten Leach Colten Leach 6'1" | PG Bedford North Lawrence | 2023 IN . Brownstown has the talent to compete with any team in the state, but I think the Stars want to continue to prove they are legit. Give me BNL here.
South Bend Washington (3A) at Penn (4A) – Feb 10th, 7:30: This is the game that stands out to me the most in the northern Indiana region this week. Penn is easily one of the better teams in Class 4A and have odds-on favorite for Mr. Basketball Markus Burton Markus Burton 5'11" | PG Penn | 2023 State #190 Nation IN . However, they have the best freshman in the state coming into town, Steven Reynolds III Steven Reynolds III 6'5" | SG South Bend Washington | 2026 State IN , so they will have to deal with that. The x-factor for me is SBW’s Marcus Northern Marcus Northern 6'2" | PG South Bend Washington | 2023 State IN and if he plays at a high level, they could upset Penn. However, this is Penn’s game to lose.
