This year’s loaded lineup included these games in the afternoon session: Mayfair vs Desert Pines (NV), Crespi vs Bakersfield Christian, and The Balboa School vs Southern California Academy.
Isiaac Boykin Isiaac Boykin 6’2″ | SG Desert Pines | 2023 State NV played a complete game on Saturday in a 71-48 win for Desert Pines (NV) over Mayfair. Boykin finished with 20 points, 3 three-pointers, and earned himself player of the game honors. Isiaac played the passing lanes, applied pressure on defense, and his all around effort was instrumental in speeding up the opponent.
Greg Burrell had a strong all-around performance on Saturday for Desert Pines (NV) in a 71-48 win over Mayfair. Burrell finished the game with 10 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 steals. Greg is built well for a guard and this is evident in his effectiveness on the glass (6 rebounds) but also in the way he is able to absorb and play through contact on his way to the rim. Would like to see him develop more confidence in his jump shot as he only attempted one three in this game.
Desman Botts Desman Botts 6’4″ | SF Mayfair | 2024 State CA-S had an impact on both ends of the floor for Mayfair on Saturday in a difficult loss to Desert Pines (NV). Botts finished with 20 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 block as well as several deflections. Desman has the build and strength to score inside effectively at the high school level but may need to work on his handle in order to create more space for himself at the next level.
Bentley Waller
Bentley Waller
Bentley Waller excelled on Saturday in a 57-48 win for Bakersfield Christian over Crespi. Waller finished the game with 22 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 3 three-pointers. Bentley has tremendous quickness/shiftyness and uses it to his advantage to create separation for himself on offense. Bentley takes and makes difficult shots but I think that his shot selection needs to improve — this could be a symptom of Bakersfield Christian’s iso oriented offense but with all of his gifts there’s no reason he wouldn’t be able to thrive in a motion offense at the next level.
Gabriel Gutierrez
Gabriel Gutierrez
Gabriel Gutierrez turned in a player of the game worthy performance on Saturday in a 57-48 win for Bakersfield Christian over Crespi. Gutierrez finished with 17 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 three-pointer. Gabriel was a nightmare for defenders in the open court in this one, routinely blowing by people to get to the basket or simply break the half/full court pressure by himself. Gutierrez’s speed also enables him to be a weapon in Bakersfield Christian’s press either as the front man, or as a ball hawk at mid-court.
Peyton White Peyton White 6’5″ | SF Crespi | 2025 State CA-S had a strong performance on Saturday in a tough 57-48 loss to Bakersfield Christian. White finished with 16 points, 10 rebounds (4 offensive), 2 assists, 3 steals, and 1 block. Peyton dominated the glass on both ends in this one and scored most of his points inside but his touch/arsenal of post moves still leave something to be desired. White excels on the defensive end and his athleticism/agility allow him to effectively play the last line of defense in a full court press, or stay with guards after a switch.
AJ Johnson AJ Johnson 6’5″ | PG Taft | 2023 #26 Nation CA-S had, by his standards, a pedestrian performance on Saturday in a 50-37 win for Southern California Academy over The Balboa School. Johnson finished the game with 11 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, and 3 steals. AJ was still able to show off his elite athleticism in this one by grabbing a steal and taking off from well outside the lane for an emphatic one-handed dunk.
Garwey Dual Garwey Dual 6’5″ | PG Carmel | 2023 #113 Nation CA-S had an excellent game on Saturday in Southern California Academy’s 50-37 win over The Balboa School. Dual finished with 19 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks. Garwey was instrumental in this win for the Rams on both ends and withstood persistent pressure from Balboa’s guards.
