Standouts:
Tyler Bergmans Tyler Bergmans 6'2" | SG South Burlington | 2024 State New E , 6’2 G – South Burlington High School Class of 2024
Tyler’s steadiness on both ends bolstered SB as they weathered an early EHS storm. Bergmans repeatedly got high percentage looks at the rim, collecting 25 points solely off of strong finishes at the cup and free throws. Moreover, he was locked in on defense as he maneuvered screens and got into help position early. Plus, I had him at 10 boards. Bergmans is smart, steady, and highly efficient.
Deng Aguek, 5’10 G – South Burlington High School Class of 2025
It was Deng’s defense which shone through in this one. He took on a tough inside/out matchup against Josh Brown and Aguek made life tough with his on-ball defense. His quickness, anticipation and elevation combined as he challenged shots, got into passing lanes, and mixed it up inside for boards. Moreover, he finished a number of tough looks at the rim, moved well off ball, hit open threes, and ran in transition. Deng is solid as they come.
Ryan Sweet, 6’0 G – South Burlington High School Class of 2023
He may not be the type to jump off the stat-sheet but Sweet had his fingerprints all over this one. Ryan’s ability to see the floor and hit guys with timely passes was a constant as he pushed in transition and facilitated in the halfcourt. Additionally, Ryan got into the second layer with nice change of pace + direction off his shifty handle, finishing looks and picking the defense apart. He’s a smart defender and a consistent rebounder too. Love his game.
Teagan Gauthier, 6’1 F – South Burlington High School Class of 2023
Gauthier’s stock rose most after this one. Teagan’s inside/out passing skills were in full effect as he threaded heady passes through the defense for clean looks around the cup, some of which turned into hockey assists. Moreover, he’s a stout inside presence, locking in against post players and collecting boards. Teagan had it going.
Josh Brown, 6’0 W/F – Essex High School Class of 2023
Leading EHS with 17 points, Josh showed his unique skill set. He’s an agile player who can both slash and post up, and he got much of his production around the cup. His feel around the iron is quite impressive as he finished from all angles, collecting a few and-1’s along the way. Furthermore, he’s a versatile defender, capable of guarding 2-4, and he hits the glass. Josh kept EHS alive throughout.
Tanner Robbins, 5’9 PG – Essex High School Class of 2023
I was most impressed with Tanner’s ballhandling and reads off of ball screens. He has a shifty handle and herky-jerk change of pace + direction with which he’s able to create space. Robbins ran his defenders right off of screeners hips, got into the second layer, and finished a couple looks + made plays for others. Tanner’s strong frame and agility aid him defensively as well; he’s a solid PG.
Tobey Appenzeller, 5’11 G – Essex High School Class of 2024
A quick ball mover and decision maker, Tobey showed nice instincts on the offensive end. He hit guys right as they came into their spot and the ball never stuck to his hands which kept the defense working. Appenzeller attacked ball pressure and created space to get into the second layer. On the other end he had solid positioning and rotations into help. Tobey showed himself to be a solid role player.
Freshman Finds:
Both of these guys were clocking crunch time minutes in the 3rd and 4th as SB had yet to truly pull away. Keep an eye on these fellas.
Cooper McCurley, 5’9 PG – Essex High School Class of 2026
When Cooper got into the action he had the poise and aggressiveness of an upperclassmen. He showed tight ball security, wise decision making with the ball in his hands, and tough on ball defense. McCurley’s ability to facilitate and control the tempo of the game was quickly evident. He’ll likely have the keys going into next season if he keeps working.
Jack Lafayette, 5’9 G – South Burlington High School Class of 2026
Jack’s defense stuck out first and foremost. His footwork is quick and fundamental whether he’s working through a screen, pressuring the ball, or sliding into help position. Lafayette put in a ton of work on the defensive end. Moreover, he made quick and smart reads both with and without the ball. His shot may have not been falling but his energy never wavered. Love his approach.
