Madison Prep came out the gates on a mission defensively to take immediately control of its Big 10 Classic matchup against Edna Karr.

The Chargers didn't allow the Cougars to score for half the first quarter or to reach double-figures until the final three minutes of the first half.

And junior guard [player_tooltip player_id='1218216' first='Jayce' last='Depron'] carried that fire to the other end of the court with his 3-point sharp-shooting to help pull away and never trail in the 46-33 victory in the HoopFests Tour event at Scotlandville.

The smooth-shooting junior came out on fire on both ends of the court. Right off the bat, he locked up an Edna Karr guard well beyond the 3-point line to force a five-second call that fired up him and his Madison Prep teammates. Depron then began draining each of his first four 3-pointers from the right corner to lead the Chargers' offensive punch. He finished with 22 points and also provided four rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot.

The senior point guard, typically a starter, came off the bench because of sprained right wrist, but wasted no time confidently jumping into the flow of the game on both ends of the court. Dominique scored 10 points, second on the team only to Depron, and grabbed four rebounds and a team-high two steals.

Coach Jeff Jones has been pleased with the development and performance of his young forward to help fill their front-court roles alongside the veteran guard group. Dabney stood out against Edna Karr with his team-high six rebounds and two blocked shots, while also scoring two points and dishing out an assist. Fellow junior Jamari Thigpen also scored four points, grabbed three rebounds and blocked two shots. And sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='1492968' first='Chris' last='Lindo'] had three rebounds, a blocked shot and a steal down the stretch.

The Cougars' tall, long guard combo didn't back down from Chargers' challenge, attacking offensively from the beginning and throughout and manning up well enough defensively — outside of Depron's explosion — to keep the Madison Prep to its lowest scoring total of the season. Jones, in particular, led the way early and finished with nine points, four rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot. And Slaughter scored a game-high 11 points and grabbed five rebounds and a steal.
