Continue ReadingDespite going down with an ankle injury in the 3rd quarter, Preston Parker Preston Parker 6’3″ | SG Sequoyah | 2023 State GA was an absolute killer in the first half. He came out firing and quickly racked up 15 first quarter points. Parker’s shooting ability was on full display as he was knocking down deep threes and hitting tough, off-balance jumpers from all over the floor. Having recently committed to Alabama-Huntsville, Parker is playing with nothing to lose and that’s scary to think about. Hopefully Parker can bounce back from injury and end his senior season on a high note.
Mike Matthews Mike Matthews 6’1″ | PG Parkview | 2024 GA is a tremendous 2-sport athlete and you can see a lot of those football abilities transfer over to the hardwood. Physically, Matthews is special. He’s got a strong physique and can jump out of the gym. On Friday night, he threw down a couple of high-flying dunks. Another way Matthews impacts the game is his energy and effort. He’s always going 100 mph and you can count on him to be on the floor for every loose ball. Parkview has been one of the most impressive teams so far this year and Mike Matthews Mike Matthews 6’1″ | PG Parkview | 2024 GA will be crucial to their success in the playoffs.
Friday night was not the first time Yusef Bowyer Yusef Bowyer 5’7″ | PG Maynard Jackson | 2025 State GA has gotten hot this year and gone for 30+. I arrived in the 1st quarter so I didn’t keep stats but rumor has it that Bowyer finished with 42 against Trinity Prep. When he gets going, it is a scary sight for defenses and he can quickly rope off 5 or 6 threes. Bowyer shows no hesitancy to pull it and he does a great job of hunting open looks. At this point in the year, Yusef Bowyer Yusef Bowyer 5’7″ | PG Maynard Jackson | 2025 State GA has made a serious case for being the most lethal shooter in the state. Maynard Jackson could be a sleeper team come playoff time because they’ve got 3 or 4 guys capable of a big scoring night.
Pau Verges
Pau Verges
Pau Verges is one of Georgia’s best kept secrets up to this point, mainly because he doesn’t play at a GHSA school. Nonetheless, Furtah has a couple of players that you need to know. Verges was able to open some eyes on Friday, playing in a tournament/showcase setting and performing well. He’s a long, athletic forward with some euro-flare to his game. Verges was effective when attacking the rim Friday and was able to finish through contact on multiple occasions. He’s also shown some impressive passing ability and court vision. Pau Verges is a name that could become much more popular in the spring and summer.
Mekhi Turner Mekhi Turner 6’8″ | PF Maynard Jackson | 2024 State #271 Nation GA has been putting the state on notice this year, proving to be one of the top forwards in Georgia’s 2024 class. Maynard Jackson seems to be a solid fit for Turner and I like what he’s able to do in their system. Turner loves to play above the rim and you can count on him for a few blocks and dunks each time out. He’s also shown the ability to step out and knock down the 15-footer consistently. As Turner continues to add to his low post game, he’ll become even more of an offensive weapon. The upside for Turner is crazy and he’s a guy who’s recruitment could really pick up soon.
