Controlling the paint is something that teams want to take advantage of and always come out with the upper hand underneath the rim. Here are some under the radar bigs who like to control and play at their best in the painted area.
Goode is an excellent example of how a player should fill in the lanes in transition. He knows exactly where to be when his teammates have the ball running down the floor. By filling in these lanes, he gives himself a great opportunity to score. If he is able to get the ball, he is great at scoring around the rim. Not only on offense does he get up the court, but he hustles on defense to stop the opposing team in transition. He is relentless when it comes to rebounding the ball. He never gives up on a missed shot and is determined to get the rebound at all costs.
Chris Ross
Chris Ross
Whenever Ross gets the ball in his hands down low, he is very meticulous and knows what he is going to do with it. Whether thats with his back to the basket or facing his defender straight-up, he finds a way to get to finish at the rim. He uses his athleticism to to stay active on the rebounding side of things and fights for the ball whenever it comes off the rim. Ross can shoot from outside as well when he is left open, especially from the corner.
Michael Schell
Michael Schell
Schell is a dominant force on the inside. He is very active on defense when defenders try to drive in on him. He is either able to stick his hand up to deflect passes or he can block shots when they try to go over top of him. Once getting a hand on the shot or pass, he is the first one to run after it and dive for the loose ball. On offense, he knows how to use his body to get position so that he is able to get the ball where he wants it. He is a great scorer and finisher with his back to the basket.
Anthony Owunna Jr.
Anthony Owunna Jr.
Owunna is great at causing havoc on defense down low. He forces his opponents to shoot over top of his long wingspan and is able to keep the ball out of the paint. On offense, he is great at getting to his spots on the floor and finishing around the rim. He is active on offense by setting off and on-ball screens for his teammates. He then rolls or finds the open spot on the floor after setting the screen.
Austin Lovejoy
Austin Lovejoy
Lovejoy is great at defending the rim. He swats away shots when opponents bring the ball in the paint. He is great at using his length to his advantage and is mobile on defense. He is able to hustle back on defense as well to get in front of his opponent and not let them have an easy shot at the basket. He sets screens on offense for his teammates in order to get open and rebounds the ball on both ends of the floor.
