In this write up you will find a Q&A session with head coach Brandon Feterl and below that, you can check out the Mustang schedule. SD boys basketball has a week of practices under its belt and they will start playing games at the end of the week. The Mustangs open up on Thursday at Parkston.
Q&A with coach Brandon Feterl
PHD: Could you write a couple of sentences summing up last season?
Coach Feterl: “We finished last season 5-15. We had a lot of close losses that could have gone either way and some injuries early on in the year. It felt like we really were playing our best basketball at the end of the season and gave Dell Rapids a good fight in the Regional loss.”
PHD: How did the offseason go for your team/program?
Coach Feterl: “We went to a few local team camps. Augustana, USF, and the SW MN Shootout. We also did some individual skill workouts out at the school. We will be replacing a lot of minutes that were lost from our seniors so it was good to see some of the younger guys against other levels of competition.”
PHD: Who are a few of your top players to look out for and why?
Coach Feterl: “ Noah Haynes Noah Haynes 6'3" | SF Tri-Valley | 2023 State SD and Braden Oyen started nearly every game for us last year so we will be looking for them to lead us this year. Trey Johnson also played more Varsity minutes as the season went along so we are looking forward to him stepping into a bigger role for us this year.”
PHD: Who are a few up-and-comers to look out for in the near future?
Coach Feterl: “Some incoming juniors who will see bigger Varsity minutes will be Trey Johnson, Logan Ellison, and Carter Sorenson. We also have a handful of underclassmen who I think will be pushing for Varsity minutes before too long. We have a ton of minutes to replace so I’m excited to see guys compete for that time throughout the year.”
PHD: What style of basketball will your team play?
Coach Feterl: “I played for Bill Marquardt in high school so defense will always be paramount for my teams. I value the ability to man up and stop the guy in front of you and know when to rotate and help. Offensively we will look to push transition when it is there and spread the floor and attack the paint when it is not.”
PHD: Who are your biggest rival schools and why?
Coach Feterl: “Baltic and Dell Rapids would probably be the two that come to mind. Mostly due to proximity. I think it’s always a little extra fun for our guys to play against kids they grew up with and have known for a long time.”
PHD: In your opinion, who are some of the top teams in your Region?
Coach Feterl: “I think our region is deep this year as always. There really won’t be any easy games in our conference or region. I think that is a great opportunity for us to grow throughout the year and be ready for that level of play by the time playoffs start. Madison, Dell Rapids, SFC, West Central, and MCM will all be very competitive throughout the year.”
