Then on Friday night, I made my way to Liberty-Benton as I watched the undefeated Eagles squad take on the then-undefeated Arlington Red Devils in a conference rivalry game. It delivered by being a great game and the Eagles of Liberty-Benton won 43-41. This article will talk about the top players from these two games.
West has always impressed me and does this by showing great improvements in parts of his game every time I watch him play. This time he impressed me with his scoring ability. It has never been something in question for West but he has never been the go-to scorer and now he is. He was shown kind of forcing the issue early in the game but once he started picking his spots out and hitting shots he is a hard player to stop. He got to the rim very well and frequently. Got a ton of his points from the free-throw line because of his aggressiveness toward the rim. He was coming up big in the Panthers’ comeback efforts in the 4th. He finished the game with 28 points but what made the biggest difference was his defensive effort in the 2nd half. His defensive intensity and pressure were phenomenal. He used his length and athleticism to absolutely lock down the Jackets’ best players in the 2nd half.
Carson Conaway
Carson Conaway
Conaway was the best player on the floor Friday night. He even looked the part. He is 6’5 with long arms and moves well. He is coming off an ACL injury so I only expect him to get bigger and more athletic. He was dominant against Arlington. He played so hard and with a lot of passion. He has a really good IQ for the game. Made really good passes. He showed good stroke when he knocked down a couple of threes throughout the game and even though he could’ve relayed on it for all his points he didn’t. He continued to put pressure on the rim all game long and it created points for himself and all his teammates. He was also blocking anything he could. He had huge plays defensively. He did not get taken out once all game and played hard the entire way.
Austin Schultz
Austin Schultz
Schultz was my MVP of the game Tuesday night. The difference of the game was Perrysburg’s fast start in the first half and Schultz was huge in that. He had 15 points in the first half. This kid can flat-out shoot the ball. He knocked every big and timely shot he needed to. He made a ton of threes and even made some very nice moves in the midrange. Schultz is a shorter kid but this kid can flat-out put the ball in the basket. Worth checking out.
Matt Watkins is a leader. He runs the show for Perrysburg flawlessly. He was super consistent all game long and turns it up in the 2nd half when he needed to. His defensive anticipation was great all night. Got a steal and a nice two-handed dunk. I was impressed with his maturity in understanding the time and score of the game. Never forced anything. When the Panthers turned up the pressure defensively he handled it well. Got it to the open player and ran the offense great.
Hunt did all the little things well for the jackets and it lead them to a huge out-of-conference game win. He did not score a bunch but he was great at rebounding. He got a ton of rebounds in traffic. He was also tasked with guarding some of Whitmer’s best players and he gave them as much as they could handle. He hustled all game long. He played a game not many noticed but was just as big to the win as anyone else.
