Games were played at various sites including the Berry Center, Cypress Ranch, Cypress Fair, and Bridgeland HS. The article covers the top performers from the 4 games I attended throughout the weekend. In the championship game of the tournament, Denton Guyer was faced up against state-ranked Cypress Creek. Denton Guyer were put in a hole from 3-star Corey Hadnot Corey Hadnot 6'3" | PG Cypress Creek | 2023 State TX ‘s 15 points first half performance. However, Denton Guyer were able to recover by putting Jeremiah Green Jeremiah Green 6'2" | CG Sunrise Christian Academy | 2025 #60 Nation KS to step up on Corey Hadnot Corey Hadnot 6'3" | PG Cypress Creek | 2023 State TX , limiting him to only 7 points in the second half. In the end, Denton Green were able to come on top. Connor Newton Connor Newton 5'8" | PG Denton Guyer | 2023 State TX won the 2022 Cy-Hoops Most Valuable Player, and Corey Hadnot Corey Hadnot 6'3" | PG Cypress Creek | 2023 State TX won the 2022 De’Aaron Fox Most Outstanding Player.
Qasim Boyd Qasim Boyd 6’0″ | PG Dickinson | 2024 State TX – 6’0″ Junior PG – #2 – Dickinson vs. South Grand PrairiernBoyd was most definitely the leading scorer of the whole Houston Methodist Cy-Hoops Tournament, and by far the most effortless scorer. He averaged 21.8 ppg, having game highs of 31 and 24. Qasim Boyd Qasim Boyd 6’0″ | PG Dickinson | 2024 State TX was a threat from the jump, where he knocked down a three to start off the game. As the game progressed, Qasim knocked triple after triple, helping his Dickinson squad to get an early lead. Boyd uses his handle package to get to certain spots to knock down difficult mid-range shots. A very underrated element in Qasim’s game that goes unnoticed is his defensive quickness. Boyd got his hands on multiple deflections on the defensive end that resulted in fast break points during transition. He ended the game off with 24 points, 5 steals, and 4 rebounds in the victory win against South Grand Prairie 64 to 36. Qasim Boyd Qasim Boyd 6’0″ | PG Dickinson | 2024 State TX is definitely one to watch as he will be a major puzzle piece to Dickinson’s success this year. His game will continue to develop in all aspects of the game as he is still a junior. Qasim’s recruitment willsoon go off this off-season as he starts AAU season.
Cameron Carroll Cameron Carroll 6’2″ | PG South Grand Prairie | 2025 State #238 Nation TX – 6’2″ Sophomore PG – #3 – South Grand Prairie vs. Dickinson & Cypress Falls Cameron Carroll Cameron Carroll 6’2″ | PG South Grand Prairie | 2025 State #238 Nation TX was arguably the best underclassmen in the Houston Methodist Cy-Hoops Invitational Tournament. At first glance, Cameron looks like an upperclassmen on his varsity squad, yet in reality he is still a sophomore. In his game against Dickinson, Cameron Carroll Cameron Carroll 6’2″ | PG South Grand Prairie | 2025 State #238 Nation TX displayed his effortless shooting and high-level IQ. Whenever a defender stepped up, he used his handle to blow past defenders and find his open teammates. Cameron controlled the pace of the game, as well as scoring the ball when necessary. In his game against Cypress Falls, Carroll hit 3 straight crucial 3-pointers to help his team be within 2 points. He is very effective off the screen, using his body to shield off his defender, hitting tough contested mid-range jumpers. After picking up a D1 offer from Mississippi State University in November, it is quite clear as to why he is one of the best players in the state of Texas. Corey Hadnot Corey Hadnot 6’3″ | PG Cypress Creek | 2023 State TX – 6’3″ Senior PG – #4 – Cypress Creek vs. Denton Guyer (Championship Game) Corey Hadnot Corey Hadnot 6’3″ | PG Cypress Creek | 2023 State TX made a case for one of the best players, if not the best, throughout the 3 days of play. Corey and his squad were able to get a spot in the championship game against Denton Guyer at the Berry Center. He started the game with an impressive dribble pull-up jumper, which striked his hot hand. Corey soared for 15 first-half points, scoring from behind the arc and in the paint — making hard bangouts on the rim. In the second half, Corey was double teamed and triple teamed, yet he used his high-level IQ of the game by finding his open teammates. Corey Hadnot Corey Hadnot 6’3″ | PG Cypress Creek | 2023 State TX ended the game with 22 points, and 8 rebounds. An aspect of Hadnot’s game that has been very interesting to watch is his calm demeanor. During game-play, Corey shows little to no emotion, just playing hard with his teammates — something that is very special. Despite the loss against Denton Guyer in the final, Corey Hadnot Corey Hadnot 6’3″ | PG Cypress Creek | 2023 State TX was named the De’Aaron Fox Most Outstanding Player of the Houston Methodist Cy-Hoops Invitational Tournament. Coming from a 17-6A boys basketball Most Valuable Player last year, Corey has the likes of achieving the same status this year. Being the heart and sole of the Cypress Creek varsity basketball team’s success, Hadnot will use his experience and knowledge of the game to have a deep run in playoffs. Corey Hadnot Corey Hadnot 6’3″ | PG Cypress Creek | 2023 State TX will take his talents to Purdue Fort Wayne in the fall of 2023, where he will quickly have an impact on their squad.
Connor Newton Connor Newton 5’8″ | PG Denton Guyer | 2023 State TX – 5’8″ Senior PG – #11 – Denton Guyer vs. Cypress Creek (Championship Game)Upon first glance, Connor Newton Connor Newton 5’8″ | PG Denton Guyer | 2023 State TX looks like a role-player; in actuality, he is a team leader. Despite being the shortest players on the court, Connor used his heart for the game to out-work his opponents. Newton’s speed and lateral quickness kept him on the floor as he was the primary ball handler for his squad. Newton uses his quickness to break the press, and find open teammates for easy fast-break points. Connor’s fast release enables him to shoot deep threes without getting his shot blocked. With this, Connor was able to bring his team out of the hole — hitting 4 crucial threes. At the end, Connor Newton Connor Newton 5’8″ | PG Denton Guyer | 2023 State TX was able to rack up 15 points and 3 rebounds. With the win against state ranked Cypress Creek in the championship, Connor Newton Connor Newton 5’8″ | PG Denton Guyer | 2023 State TX was able to win Houston Methodist Cy-Hoops Invitational Tournament Most Valuable Player.
Jeremiah Green Jeremiah Green 6’2″ | CG Sunrise Christian Academy | 2025 #60 Nation KS – 6’3″ Sophomore PG – #11 – Denton Guyer vs. Cypress Creek (Championship Game)rnInserted into the varsity lineup as a sophomore, Jeremiah Green Jeremiah Green 6’2″ | CG Sunrise Christian Academy | 2025 #60 Nation KS is another impressive underclassmen. Green was the primary defender on Cypress Creek’s star player Corey Hadnot Corey Hadnot 6’3″ | PG Cypress Creek | 2023 State TX , and was able to shut him down to only 7 points in the second half. Green’s defensive presence was a vital factor in their success in the final. Along with his teammate, Connor Newton Connor Newton 5’8″ | PG Denton Guyer | 2023 State TX , they both were able to bring the game into single digits. Green put his pull-up jumpers on display, hitting crucial shots late in the second half. Jeremiah Green Jeremiah Green 6’2″ | CG Sunrise Christian Academy | 2025 #60 Nation KS ended the game with 18 points and 2 rebounds with the championship title.
