Bol Bol is really tall, and watching a Pistons brawl post Malice is quite an experience. Needless to say I wasn’t watching high school basketball on Wednesday.
So after taking my son to a NBA contest for Christmas. I returned to more familiar surroundings at Ferndale high school for Day 3. I’ll use the same format to close out my 2022 coverage. Breaking up the games into two separate sessions followed by giving five new names.
Following are five standouts from games 2-4
Jonathan Ingalls Jonathan Ingalls 6'0" | CG St. Ignace | 2024 MI 6-0 2024 St Ignace (pictured) I unfortunately missed game one. So the day started out with a bang from this player from the Upper Peninsula. Comes from a prominent coaching family and it shows in how he plays. Choose your animal centric ball handling terminology and he has that his tool box. Crab dribble, snake dribble, crow hop etc. It’s all there. Showed extremely deep range from the perimeter. Also had some simply absurd kick out passes to open shooters that showed next level court vision. Finished with 23 points and earned the Saints a victory to take back over the bridge. If things break right this might not be the only game he plays downstate this season.
Noah Adamczyk Noah Adamczyk 6'0" | PG Bloomfield Hills | 2023 State MI 6-0 2023 Bloomfield Hills Another bouncy lead guard who is almost the mirror image of Ingalls. Just older and a bit more refined. With the new addition of standout 2026 prospect Drew Wilson Drew Wilson 6'1" | PG Bloomfield Hills Mi | 2026 State MI . Adamczyk was able to move off the ball. Appeared to thrive in this roll. Makes up for lack of a size by being a explosive leaper with good hang time. Accordingly has no problem finishing around the rim. Good enough shooter to keep defenses honest. Clever and willing defender as well. You don’t often see blocked shots from the point guard position. Adamczyk went further and provided an emphatic volleyball spike rejection on a corner three. Has been a four year contributor for the Hawks. Will be playing somewhere next year.
Owen Colpaert Owen Colpaert 6'1" | SG Macomb Dakota | 2023 State MI 6-4 2023 Macomb Dakota In the new recruiting reality of the 21st century. Football commitments will often graduate early and leave after the first semester to get a jumpstart their careers on campus. Colpaert has committed to Saginaw Valley St. There is no indication that he is leaving and I am not implying that he should. I’m just trying to set up a point. He played Wednesday like it was his last game. He left it all out on the court in a nail biting victory over a good Oak Park squad. Was everywhere on both sides of the court. If there was a loose ball he was on top of it. Hit a ridiculously deep three at a crucial point of the game. As you would expect from his gridiron exploits. Not afraid of contact and has a sturdy well built frame. But it’s not all bully ball. Is a skilled ball handler and a crafty finisher around the basket. Versatility in his game was reflected in the stat line. Finished with 19 points, six rebounds, and five assists. It should be noted that the coaching staff from SVSU was present on Wednesday. He might have given them something to think about on the foggy ride back up I-75 that night.
Nathan Washburn Nathan Washburn 6'8" | C Phhoenix Prep | 2024 State AZ 6-8 2024 Macomb Dakota While Colpaert took home game MVP honors it was Washburn who came up big— literally in the clutch for the Wildcats. Calmly stuck two free throws to take the lead. Then closed out hard on a guard to bother game tying shot attempt. This showed off his length and intriguing lateral quickness for a big. Was very active on both the offensive and defensive glass all day. While it wasn’t as readily apparent on Wednesday. Has a soft touch around the basket and can finish over both shoulders. Finished with 11 points and six rebounds. However theses numbers only tell part of the story.
Geon Hutchins Geon Hutchins 6'4" | SG Oak Park | 2025 State MI 6-3 2025 Oak Park Bouncy lanky wing who showed a lot of potential. Used a tight handle to get to his spots easily on the perimeter. Quick elevation allows him to get his shot off with ease. Has a smooth and confident release with little wasted motion. Wasn’t falling at a high clip on Wednesday. But mechanically the shot appeared very sound. Finishing more efficiently at the rim will come as he adds more bulk to his slender frame. However that same frame gives potential upside as a defender and two way player. Youngest player on this list. But might have the most long term potential.
