He is a captain for the Colts. Mason is a guy who is an all-around player, a guy who can score anywhere on the court, and also a player who can be aggressive on defense. Storbakken can create turnovers on D and also lead the team as a motivator on and off the court.
Teddy Flaa Teddy Flaa 6'0" | SG Richland | 2023 State ND (2023) |6’0 G| – ’21-’22 stats: 8.8 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 3 apg
He is an assistant captain for the Colts. Flaa is a guy who can drive to the basket with a very quick first step. Teddy also has a sweet jump shot. When he slashes and gets to the rim, Flaa has the strength to score in traffic. Defensively, he is a guy who can box out bigger players while getting the rebound and pushing the tempo transition game.
Casyn Syvertsen Casyn Syvertsen 6'5" | PF Richland | 2024 State ND (2024) |6’5 PF| – ’21-’22 stats: 7.2 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 1.4 apg
He is a BIG guy that has great footwork down low. Syvertsen can keep the D honest by stepping out to hit the perimeter jump shot. Defensively, Casyn is a shot blocker and rim protector. He rebounds well and has the ability to push the transition game with his dribbling ability.
Levi Ulven (2024) |6’4 SF|
He is a lanky kid who can dominate down low while being a consistent outside shooter. Ulven can slash into the lane and score by getting good looks. He brings length and rebounding skills on the defensive end.
Nick Wulfekuhle (2024) |6′ SF| – ’21-’22 stats: 3.9 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 1.7 apg
He is an assistant captain for the Colts. Nick is a player whose motor is always turning at top speed. He is the Colt defense stopper, a guy who can guard anyone, and they don’t want him to guard them. Wulfekuhle is a blue-collar player who is constantly trying to get better, no matter what it takes. If you like hard workers, watch this kid play.
Nick Mjoness (2024) |5’11 G|
A backcourt play that brings energy and juice. Mjoness is gritty on defense and is not afraid to get on the floor for the ball. Offensively, Nick is a good set shooter. He can knock down shots from outside and can get to the cup for scores.
Q&A with coach Jamie Nordick
PHD: What can you tell us about last season?
Coach Nordick: “Talking about last season, we were a young team really trying to find our identity early, coming off a 1-win season the year before so we struggled early, but we were in games. Near the end of the year is when we started to hit our stride. Finding ways to close out games, while fighting adversity to come back and finding ways to win. We would end the regular season as the #9 seed with a 5-15 record. We would end up going to Hankinson and get a close win to make it to the second round of regions and play the #1 seed, Enderlin, where we would fall short and end the year with a 6-16 record.”
PHD: How did the offseason go for your team/program?
Coach Nordick: “We would have a solid offseason with Speed and Strength while going to summer camps. We would go to the MSUM team camp and play against some bigger schools while playing against schools our size. We would also have our school basketball camp with 4th through 9th grade, having the older kids help and get experience helping out the younger kids in our program.”
PHD: Who are a few of your top players to look out for and why?
Coach Nordick: “Our top players are our seniors Mason Storbakken Mason Storbakken 6'0" | CG Richland | 2023 State ND and Teddy Flaa Teddy Flaa 6'0" | SG Richland | 2023 State ND , two kids with a lot of experience and motivation to bring this program back to where we were and started back in 2016 and ended in 2020 as top teams in the region. Both are team-first guys but also guys who can carry the team when need be.”
PHD: Who are a couple of up-and-comers to look out for?
Coach Nordick: “First would be our big guy Casyn Syvertsen Casyn Syvertsen 6'5" | PF Richland | 2024 State ND , he’s a Jr who really started to figure out his style of play at the end of last year, I feel he will be a kid in our region that other teams will try to focus on and stop. He will have a potentially big season this year.”
“Next would be our other big guy, a 6’4 Jr. Levi Ulvin – Someone who has grown as a basketball player, he just gets better every day. He’s the type of guy who will raise some eyebrows during the year.“
“One more would be Nick Mjoness. A 5’11 PG. He had some playing time last year as one of the first kids off the bench. Tough kid who’s always ready to work and bring the energy offensively as a consistent scorer and defensively as a solid stopper.“
PHD: What style of basketball will your team play?
Coach Nordick: “We have a style of creating chaos on defense, we speed up teams to their discomfort, we make them turn it over or make them take a quick shot, then get it and go in transition. Offensively like I said, get it and go in transition, trying to get to the rim while having guys cut to the basket and also having guys ready to shoot if the ball gets kicked out. But also having the ability to slow it down on offense and getting a set play in and moving the ball till we get the best shot.”
PHD: Who are your biggest rival schools and why?
Coach Nordick: “Really anyone in our region, but our top would have to be Enderlin, they beat us in the playoffs and left a bad taste in our mouths and we want to avenge that loss. Then Oak Grove, they are always tough and they always find a way to win games, the great programs always do. Lastly would be Northern Cass, they knocked us out of playoffs two years ago and we had a great game with them last year where we fell short by 3. But really any big school, it’s always special when you find a way to knock off the big guys but if you wanna be the best you gotta beat the best.”
PHD: In your opinion, who are some of the top teams in your Region and why?
Coach Nordick: “Well, the top teams this year are Central Cass, a very experienced team with some great young talent. Kindred, a big team who did lose a few seniors but they had a very solid JV team last year as well as finishing 2nd in State. Oak Grove, and Sargent Central, are both teams who have experience coming back, and both have some of the top players in the State. But you never know with our region, it’s a hard and tough region where you have to play your best every night because you can get beat any night by any team.”
PHD: How have practices been going and how does the team look?
Coach Nordick: “Practices have been going very well so far, we have some older experienced guys returning, so they understand the system that we want to play, while guiding the younger kids and helping them understand how it’s done. We have looked solid so far but will see how we look after the first game on Tuesday.”
PHD: Are any players surprising you so far?
Coach Nordick: “Our seniors! They have really stepped up and become leaders for the program. Player wise I’d say Levi Ulvin and Nick Mjoness have shown tremendous leaps in improvement following last season, building basketball IQ and building that competitive environment during practice.”
PHD: Who have been your hardest workers?
Coach Nordick: “It’s hard to single out our hardest workers cause they all work very hard, but the guy who will catch your eye is Nick Wulfekuhle. The guy doesn’t stop working, always pushes himself no matter what. Then I would have to go Wade Gorder, he’s a 6’1 Jr who is big physical guy who pushes the team to do better, and brings the competitive atmosphere to the next level.“
Good Luck Colts!
