The 2022-23 high school basketball season is off to an outstanding start especially following some high-powered games last week. Check out all of our coverage from the Sneakers for Santa Shootout at Brownsburg last weekend as well as the Forum Tipoff Classic at Southport this weekend. This week's top 10 games feature several elite matchups, with a lot of talent being showcased in the various games across the state as well as in Southport. Let's take a look at my top ten upcoming games across the state listed in order that they will be played.
<strong>#4 Carmel @ #10 Fishers - Tuesday at 7:30</strong>
This Sectional 8 matchup features two of the top-10 teams in the Prep Hoops 4A poll and a couple of the top prospects in the state of Indiana. Carmel is off to a 3-1 start with their lone loss coming to out-of-state, Moline (IL). The Greyhounds have picked up wins over Zionsville, Lawrence Central, and Plainfield on the season. Belmont commit [player_tooltip player_id='1042491' first='Sam' last='Orme'] leads the way with fellow seniors [player_tooltip player_id='868225' first='Spencer' last='White'] and [player_tooltip player_id='935725' first='Jared' last='Bonds'] helping out. Fishers is led by the top player in the 2025 class, [player_tooltip player_id='1297052' first='Jalen' last='Haralson']. Haralson is averaging 26 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists on the year for the Tigers. [player_tooltip player_id='1578471' first='Taden' last='Metzger'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1525664' first='Jonanthony' last='Hall'] are each top-20 players in their classes and are good second and third options for the Tigers.
<strong>Anderson @ Indianapolis Tech - Friday at 7:30</strong>
This North Central Conference matchup features a pair of teams who have really high hopes going into the 2022-23 season. Anderson comes in at 3-0 with convincing wins over Pendleton Heights, Lapel, and New Castle. The Indians are led by senior forward [player_tooltip player_id='1391283' first='Ahmere' last='Carson'] who owns a pair of DI offers from Milwaukee and South Carolina State. He is averaging 21 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 4.0 assists on the year. [player_tooltip player_id='1391284' first='Jaquan' last='Ingram'], [player_tooltip player_id='1556394' first='Jaylen' last='Murphy'], and [player_tooltip player_id='1297010' first='Damien' last='King'] each average double-figures to give Anderson a tough four-headed monster. Indianapolis Tech lost fairly handily to both Warren Central and North Central to start the year, but the Muncie Central transfer [player_tooltip player_id='1556381' first='Malik' last='Hasani'] leads the Titans at 19.0 points per game on the season.
<strong>#1 Brownstown Central @ #4 Scottsburg - Friday at 7:30</strong>
This Mid-Southern Conference game features two of the best teams in Southern Indiana with 2A #1 Brownstown Central and 3A #4 Scottsburg. Brownstown has wins over defending 2A state champ Providence and 4A Seymour to start the season. Purdue commit [player_tooltip player_id='1158245' first='Jack' last='Benter'] leads the way for the Braves with [player_tooltip player_id='1556396' first='Jakob' last='Arthur'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1547584' first='Parker' last='Hehman'] adding some solid minutes as well. Scottsburg has taken care of business early with big wins over teams they should beat. They also went to Cincinnati and beat Walnut Hills on Saturday. Scottsburg is led by their trio of outstanding juniors with [player_tooltip player_id='1578484' first='Wyatt' last='Zellers'], [player_tooltip player_id='1276470' first='Jack' last='Miller'], and [player_tooltip player_id='1401893' first='Kody' last='Clancy']. This game will go a long way to deciding who the best team in Southern Indiana really is.
<strong>#7 Eastern Hancock @ Northeastern - Friday at 7:30</strong>
2A #7 Eastern Hancock fell to New Palestine in their first big test of the season last Friday. They have a chance to bounce back this week against fellow 2A Northeastern. The Royals are led by their senior twins [player_tooltip player_id='1393268' first='Jacob' last='Spaulding'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1393269' first='Silas' last='Spaulding']. Jacob is averaging 18.7 points on the season while Silas is averaging 14.7, and the duo is shooting a whopping 46% from three. Northeastern opened their season with a big road win over an impressive Seton Catholic team, and they are coming off a close loss to 4A Greenfield-Central. The Knights are led by several seniors with [player_tooltip player_id='1293345' first='Keaton' last='Mikesell'] leading the way at 11.5 points per game. [player_tooltip player_id='1292539' first='Grant' last='Luebbe'] is averaging just shy of 10 points per game as well. With each of these teams looking to bounce back from losses to 4A teams, this should be highly competitive.
<strong>Rock Creek Academy @ Christian Academy - Friday at 7:30</strong>
In an early season 1A sectional matchup, #5 Rock Creek visits unbeaten Christian Academy. Rock Creek fell to Jennings County last week after opening with a win over Henryville. The Lions are led by 6'11" center [player_tooltip player_id='1391464' first='Marial' last='Diper'] who is going to be very hard to stop inside. Christian Academy is unbeaten on the season with a win over New Washington. The Warriors are led by their sophomore duo of David Cook and [player_tooltip player_id='1578422' first='Joshua' last='Renfro'] who are each scored over 22 points in both of their two game and combining for 15 rebounds per game. This will be a very fun game to watch.
<strong>#2 North Daviess vs. #5 Beech Grove - Saturday at 12:00 at Southport</strong>
This game kicks off an exciting day of basketball at Southport with the defending 1A state champs North Daviess who has jumped up from 1A to 3A this year taking on the defending 3A state champs. North Daviess opened their season with wins over Loogootee, Terre Haute North, and Evansville Christian. the Oakland City commit [player_tooltip player_id='935727' first='Jaylen' last='Mullen'] leads the Cougars in the backcourt with the senior twins [player_tooltip player_id='1556399' first='Lance' last='Wilson'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1556400' first='Logan' last='Wilson'] adding quality minutes. Beech Grove lost [player_tooltip player_id='868242' first='Anthony' last='Ball'] in the offseason, but they still have a ton of talent and have shown that. The Hornets picked up a nice win over our 3A #1 NorthWood last weekend. A group of four seniors leads Beech Grove with [player_tooltip player_id='1530699' first='Jeremiah' last='Alexander'], [player_tooltip player_id='1556397' first='Jeremiah' last='Tate'], [player_tooltip player_id='1621341' first='Jaleel' last='Edwards'], and Cam Brown all averaging double-figures on the season.
<strong>#6 Brownsburg @ Chesterton - Saturday at 5:00 CT</strong>
#6 Brownsburg hits the road on Saturday to go North to take on the defending 4A runners-up Chesterton. Brownsburg is unbeaten with wins over North Central, Franklin Central, Heritage Hills, and Lakota West in Ohio. The elite wing duo of Purdue commit [player_tooltip player_id='1275779' first='Kanon' last='Catchings'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1391626' first='Elhadj' last='Diallo'] come in averaging 19.0 and 17.3 points per game as well as each being over 7.0 rebounds per game. Chesterton comes in with a trio of big wins over Elkhart, Hammond Morton and Lowell. Chesterton lost their star Travis Grayson, but [player_tooltip player_id='1391867' first='Owen' last='Guest'], [player_tooltip player_id='1275807' first='Tyler' last='Parrish'], and [player_tooltip player_id='1158231' first='Justin' last='Sims'] take the reins in their first test of the season.
<strong>#3 Penn vs. #5 Zionsville - Saturday at 7:00 at Southport</strong>
Our second Southport game on the list happens to be the second to last of the night with a pair of top-5 4A teams in action. Penn opened the season with big wins over South Bend Clay and Crown Point. This game will be the first big test for the Kingsmen. Notre Dame commit [player_tooltip player_id='1049169' first='Markus' last='Burton'] had 33 points and 10 steals in the season opener. [player_tooltip player_id='1391326' first='Joey' last='Garwood'] also had a big first game with 22 points and 6 rebounds. Zionsville is 2-2 after a couple of tough losses to #4 Carmel and #2 Ben Davis, but they bounced back with wins over Westfield and Gary 21st Century. The Eagles are led by a couple of DI guys with Penn State commit [player_tooltip player_id='868255' first='Logan' last='Imes'] and Charlotte commit [player_tooltip player_id='868244' first='Nick' last='Richart']. If you can get to Southport all day on Saturday, you should do so, but every high school basketball fan should be there starting at 7:00 on Saturday night.
<strong>Warren Central @ #1 Mishawaka Marian - Saturday at 7:30</strong>
Warren Central lost Tae Davis last year, but they have reloaded with [player_tooltip player_id='868218' first='Jalen' last='Hooks'] coming back to the state of Indiana for his senior season. The Warriors started the year with wins over Tech and Jeffersonville. The Warriors also have several other pieces with Davaon Holman, [player_tooltip player_id='1049166' first='Tyler' last='Horton'], [player_tooltip player_id='1277566' first='Nick' last='Glover'] and [player_tooltip player_id='1297060' first='Jevon' last='Guess']. Mishawaka Marian is the #1 3A team and coming off of runners-up finish in the state finals last season. The Knights picked up wins over Goshen, South Bend Riley, and Fort Wayne Luers to start the season. [player_tooltip player_id='1049162' first='Deaglan' last='Sullivan'] leads the team with 23.0 rebounds, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.0 steals on the year. [player_tooltip player_id='1049174' first='Dareon' last='Thornton'] has also added 17.3 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. This will be a big test for both of these teams at the start of the season.
<strong>#1 Indianapolis Cathedral vs. #2 Ben Davis - Saturday at 8:30 at Southport</strong>
The easiest game to put on this list had to be the finale at Southport. #1 vs #2. It is unfortunate that this cannot be a state finals matchup. Cathedral is 4-0 with wins over Fort Wayne North, Jeffersonville, Brebeuf Jesuit, and Centerville (OH). They are the best all-around team in the state with Michigan State commit [player_tooltip player_id='868219' first='Xavier' last='Booker'] leading the way. Booker comes in at 16 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 blocks. [player_tooltip player_id='868252' first='Jaron' last='Tibbs'] is a Purdue football commit who leads the team in points and assists at 21 and 5. Portage transfer [player_tooltip player_id='868227' first='Kamari' last='Slaughter'] and Mercer commit [player_tooltip player_id='868251' first='Jake' last='Davis'] are each averaging double figures as well. Ben Davis is unbeaten with five good wins over Fishers, Zionsville, Pike, Southport, and Kokomo. The Giants senior class is outstanding with Valparaiso commit [player_tooltip player_id='1042497' first='Zane' last='Doughty'] and Sheridan Sharpe who has multiple mid-major offers. Then they have [player_tooltip player_id='1158204' first='K.J.' last='Windham'] is one of the top players in the 2024 class. He also has multiple mid-major offers. There will be a minimum of six Division 1 players in this game, so this is no doubt a can't miss game.
