Coach Peterreins comments after the W in game 1
“Our team defense led the way as we applied good pressure on the perimeter and rebounded well to limit their 2nd chance opportunities. We want our defense to be our constant in each game and we feel our offense will come as the season progresses.”
“Braydon Simon did a great job defending their best player Mehki Keller and made sure every offensive look was challenged. He certainley expended a lot of energy on the the defensive end to help us get the first win of the season.”
“ Gavin Benck Gavin Benck 6'2" | PF Deuel | 2023 State SD and Trey Maaland were very good on both sides of the court. Their active hands defensively created a lot of deflections and steals to get our team transition game going.”
“Overall I felt it was good team win led by our defense and now we can focus on becoming more efficient offensively.”

Q&A with coach Jon Peterreins
PHD: What can you tell us about last season?
Coach Peterreins: “The 21-22 Deuel Cardinals put in the hard work and helped move the program in the right direction. The varsity finished 10-11 and tied for 2nd in the Northeast Conference with a record of 6-4. The Junior Varsity finished 11-7 and gained some great experience for the next season. The C Team finished 9-3 and also made some great progress.”
PHD: How did the offseason go for your team/program?
Coach Peterreins: “Our focus has been to continue to add skill and put in the time for strength training during the off season. It’s been great to see the progress made in the gym and in the weight room. We had a great summer of hoops playing in team camps and also competitive leagues in Sioux Falls and Watertown. We need to take that experience into this season and keep working towards playing our best team ball.”
PHD: What style of basketball will your team play?
Coach Peterreins: “We feel this team has the potential to play at a high level when pacing the game offensively and applying solid defensive pressure. This team has prided themselves on their defense and making that our identity. We want to play in space offensively and allow our players to make plays.”
PHD: In your opinion, who are some of the top teams in Region 2?
Coach Peterreins: “Region 2: Sioux Valley, Hamlin, and Clark Willow Lake all return solid lineups and are well coached teams.”
Good Luck Cardinals
