Q&A with coach Fechner
PHD: Could you tell us a bit about last season?
Coach Fechner: “Another year of growth for our squad as we have had a young team for the last two years. We had guys like Jacob Vandeweerd Jacob Vandeweerd 6'8" | PF Canton | 2023 State SD , Derek Tieszen Derek Tieszen 6'1" | CG Canton | 2023 State SD , and Matthew Anderson Matthew Anderson 6'6" Canton | 2024 SD take huge strides in the leadership department and they had really good off-season’s.”
PHD: How did the offseason go for your team/program?
Coach Fechner: “We had a good offseason of open gyms as well as playing in team camps like Summer Jam at the Pentagon.”
PHD: Who are a few of your top players to look out for?
Coach Fechner: “ Jacob Vandeweerd Jacob Vandeweerd 6'8" | PF Canton | 2023 State SD , Derek Tieszen Derek Tieszen 6'1" | CG Canton | 2023 State SD , and Matthew Anderson Matthew Anderson 6'6" Canton | 2024 SD will be the guys we lean on this season. They have been our core guys the last couple of years with Derek and Jacob being 3-year starters and Matt a two-year starter. We have some young guys that will need to step up as well but have extreme confidence in this group of guys after the summer they had.”
PHD: Who are a couple up-and-comers to look out for?
Coach Fechner: “Cain Wallner has a great frame and has really grown the last two years as a basketball player. Braxton Mulder was our 6th man last season and a really good shooter and will help stretch the floor to offer space for Jake, Matt, and Derek to work.”
PHD: What style of basketball will your team play?
Coach Fechner: “We will continue to grow throughout the season. You will see a mix of zone and man, full court and half court, motion and sets. We are going to play to our strengths every game. Not many teams have 6’9″ in the middle, 6’7″ at the wing, and a three-year starter at point guard with shooters on the wing.”
PHD: Who are your biggest rival schools and why?
Coach Fechner: “Lennox (Black and Blue Bowl) has always been our schools biggest rival dating way back. Beresford is just a few miles away so the student sections at those games are great. We have had 3 really close games the last couple years and the gym is extremely loud.”
PHD: In your opinion, who are some of the top teams in your Region and why?
Coach Fechner: “Dakota Valley, Lennox, Dell Rapids, Sioux Falls Christian.”
Good Luck C-Hawks!
