For the more traditional readers, we will be doing a preview of All State teams by classifications too. While most VISAA All State teams have two teams with between 14 and 16 players between the two, we have decided to simply list some of the players we expect to be on the team at the end of the season.
With that being said, here’s a look at some of our picks for VISAA D1 All State candidates, looking at six players we expect to be in the conversation.
POY: DeShawn Harris-Smith DeShawn Harris-Smith 6'5" | SF Paul VI | 2023 State #53 Nation VA | 6’4” CG | Paul VI 2023
Harris-Smith was an easy choice for Preseason Player of the Year as he won the award last year and the Maryland commit leads a PVI team that could be the deepest and most talented one legendary Head Coach Glenn Farello has had. Harris-Smith is a dynamic two way playmaker who is a tough nosed defender with length and athleticism, he can put it on the deck and get to the rim where he’s a big time finisher and he can make plays for others in the paint and he exudes toughness in every thing that he does on the court.
Carter Lang Carter Lang 6'9" | C St. Anne's Belfield | 2023 State #199 Nation VA | 6’9” C | STAB 2023
Lang was a First Team All State selection last year, and this STAB team that he’s on is perhaps the best one they’ve had in the past decade and he’ll have plenty of chances to put up big numbers again this year. The Vanderbilt commit is a walking double-double with good touch in the paint and a big frame to seal and finish, he pursues the basketball on the glass on both ends but really thrives on the offensive glass and he’s shown the ability to step out and play on the perimeter in pick-and-pop situations too.
John St. Germain John St. Germain 6'2" | PG St. Anne's Belfield | 2023 State VA | 6’0” PG | STAB 2023
St. Germain will be the straw that stirs the drink for this talented STAB team this year, and the way he played this summer he looks like he’s ready to run the show and lead this talented group to a state playoff run. The 6’0” lead guard has incredible feel and he can throw every pass imaginable with either hand, he changes speeds and directions well and when he gets in the paint he’s a good finisher through traffic and knows how to draw contact and he has great instincts on the defensive end too.
Gibraltar Coleman Gibraltar Coleman 6'6" | PF Flint Hill | 2023 State VA | 6’7” PF | Flint Hill 2023
Coleman is coming off of a huge summer and has improved drastically over the past few years, and the American commit is going to be the go-to guy for the Huskies this year and will put up big numbers. At 6’7” he’s a super versatile scorer who can make shots from deep and put it on the deck, he can overpower smaller guys in the post and finish around the rim and he gets to the line often for easy point too.
Luke Smith Luke Smith 6'9" | C Collegiate | 2023 State VA | 6’8” PF | Collegiate 2023
Smith was a Second Team All State selection last year, and the University of Chicago commit has really figured out his game and is coming off a very impressive summer. The 6’8” post man can seal in the paint and has good moves to finish around the rim, he can step outside where he can knock down shots consistently and put it on the deck in a few dribbles and he’s an excellent passer both in the half court and on outlet passes to start the break.
Khalil Williams Khalil Williams 6'5" | SG Potomac (McLean, VA) | 2023 State VA | 6’5” WG | Potomac School 2023
Many will say that Williams was snubbed from the All State teams last season, and with Potomac School coming off of an impressive season and even improved this year he will have a chance to put up numbers against some of the top competition. Williams is wired to go as he has a great frame and thrives in his ability to get downhill and finish around and above the rim, he can score it from multiple levels when he gets it going and he has a lot of confidence in his ability to score it.
