PHH Prep Classic: AZ Standouts

I am definitely back tracking here with many events going on. But I did not want to miss some standouts here.

On Sunday October 2nd I attended the annual Phhoenix Prep Classic at the Phhacility in Phx, AZ.

There were around 20 teams from the West in attendance.

Four states represented the prep teams and here were some of the local standouts:

2023

Michael DeHorney Michael DeHorney 6'8" | PF AZ Compass Prep | 2023 State AZ AZ Compass Prep Black

A long high motored forward scores it efficiently in the paint. He can give a ball fake and is very patient to score around traffic. He will flush it down and rebound at a high rate.

Erenzo Scroggins Erenzo Scroggins 6'4" | SF AZ Compass Prep Black | 2023 State AZ AZ Compass Prep Black

An athletic forward is a physical presence. He will grab every 50/50 ball that goes up on the glass. He is a very good passer and gets downhill. He can get in rhythm and hit the three.  

AJ Turner AJ Turner 5'11" | PG Skyline Prep | 2023 State AZ Skyline Prep

The starting PG is slowly turning into that true point guard who is looking to set up his teammates more. He can still score but he plays fast, shows off his athleticism and he is the engine of the team. 

2024

Cooper Campbell Cooper Campbell 6'1" | CG Phhoenix Prep | 2024 State AZ Phhoenix Prep

One of the deepest shooters in the state with legit volleyball line range. He knows how to hesitate and change speeds to get to the rim. A sneaky good passer but his shooing clearly makes his game go.

KJ Perry KJ Perry 6'2" | SG Hillcrest Prep | 2024 CA-S Hillcrest Prep

An athletic guard flies on the break. He loves the pull-up from mid-range and takes contact well after a big burst into the lane. He can defend both guard spots and made a few highlight reel plays in transition.

Gerrell Trapps Gerrell Trapps 6'1" | PG AZ Compass Prep | 2024 IL Compass Prep Black

A physical guard plays on or off the ball can score it plus make plays. The lefty can hit the catch three, he is tough getting downhill and he can also pull-up from mid-range. He is fierce on the ball defensively and he seems to gets into paint at will with his build, handle and strength.

JJ Funk JJ Funk 6'7" | PF Skyline Prep | 2024 State AZ Skyline Prep National

The power forward from Idaho has some springs in his legs. He plays with a great motor to rebound the ball and will block shots in his area with his timing and bounce. He can dunk it easily and he will score on put backs.   

Evan Coates Evan Coates 6'9" | C Bella Vista Prep | 2024 State AZ Phhoenix Prep

A post player with a long reach who keeps balls alive. He can taps the ball out for extra possessions for his team and will keep it high and outlets it well. He can score on layups, put backs and hit the occasional three. 

2025

David Franks David Franks 6'0" | CG Phhoenix Prep | 2025 State AZ Phhoenix Prep

A scoring combo guard has surprisingly become very athletic over the last year. His ability to defend on the ball and shoot it with range makes him valuable. He also can hesitate and take a bump once he gets into the lane. His pull-up from mid-range can be a college weapon.

Jules Randy Jules Randy 6'8" | PF Bella Vista Prep | 2025 State AZ Bella Vista Prep

A good sized power forward with length. He is a high flier who will throw it down on the break. He moved in just recently and immediately made an impact on the team. He plays hard and will score it inside.

2026

Cameron Williams Cameron Williams 6'9" | PF Centennial | 2026 State AZ Skyline Prep (Pictured)

A long and lean fluid wing forward. He handles the ball well and has great size for position already. He can shoot the three but is best getting to the rim and loves using the floater or runner. He defends well in space and moves his hips quickly.
