Continue ReadingCoach Dell Johnson consistently holds some of the top open runs in Michigan. They are always intense, competitive, and the players play hard. There is usually talent from various classes in the gym. There was even a 2022, Markel Kelly, that had a post high school growth spurt and is now a 6-3 athletic guard that is still available. We’re going to look at 5 players that starred at Coach Dell’s most recent open run.
Joss Bradley Joss Bradley PG Saginaw Heritage | 2024 State MI (2024, CG, Saginaw Heritage)
Bradley made a big statement at the open, easily being one of the top performers in the gym. He got the job done at both ends of the floor. Bradley slashed to the basket and got buckets. He always seemed to make the right pass at the right time. Bradley proved that he’s a player to keep an eye on this coming high school season.
Justin Odoms Justin Odoms 6'1" | PG Hartland | 2023 State MI (2023, CG, Hartland)
Odoms had a great showcase season, starring at both the David Barns Showcase and the Prep Hoops Michigan Top 250. His recruitment has since gained steam and it’s time for college coaches to take a serious look at this young man. He’s a natural scorer and bucket getter that can shoot the lights out with incredibly deep range. Odoms’ ball handling abilities allow him to be a primary ball handler as well as drive to the basket and finish or dish.
David Thomas David Thomas 6'2" | SF Heritage | 2023 State MI (2023, SF, Bay City Western)
Thomas has always been a terrific athlete. He can get off the ground in a hurry and go high for boards and finishes at the rim. Thomas has a chance to be one of the most improved players in the state this year. He broke his collarbone and missed all of last season, but is ready to go off this year. Thomas had added a lot of muscle and has improved his ball handling and his jumper. At the open run, he was showing his strength in the paint with jump hooks and post moves.
Mason Struck Mason Struck 6'6" | PF Chesaning | 2024 State MI (2024, F, Chesaning)
We have Struck listed as a power forward , but he could easily play multiple positions. It’s starting to look like he could translate as a 3 at the next level. He can score inside and out, constantly taking advantage of in game matchups. He’s going to be very hard for high school coaches to gameplan for. Struck is an excellent rebounder that is willing to go after the ball off the glass and not wait for it to come to him. He really showed his versatility at the open run with his ability to handle and lead the fastbreak.
Gage Coonan Gage Coonan 5'10" | PG Saginaw Heritage | 2024 State MI (2024, PG, Saginaw Heritage)
Coonan is a player that college coaches will want to pay attention to this season. It’s great to have a lead guard that can fill it up from deep and that’s what Coonan looks like to me. Coonan is confident in his jumper and has shown a good understanding of when and where his team may need him to fill one up from behind the arc. He’s a no nonsense type of ball handler that gets it from A to B in an efficient manner.
